Re: MARILOUISE - OT - more about exotropia/strabismus

Marilouise,

I am curious about this because my 4 year old daughter just had

strabismus surgery in May. The doctors (we saw 3) told us that

patching would not help because the exotropia was due to " loose "

muscles allowing her eye to wander. I am wondering if there is

something different about her case? I have since heard about other

parents using patching and am wondering if we went the surgical route

on this one without doing enough research? I feel kind of weird about

being so pro-non-surgery for clubfoot, but then jumping right on the

bandwagon when they told me that Jenna needed surgery for her eyes.

Thanks,

Hi ,

I am really not sure to tell you the truth. I know of three moms

whose children all had strabismus surgery and I don't know the

specifics of their children's eyes. Maybe because is so

little they are willing to see if this works first before trying the

surgery. Her opthomologist mentioned it as something farther down

the road if necessary.

If the surgery helped Jenna then don't second guess your choice on

this. I'll update on as we go along and we'll see if the

patching makes a difference. I found the other eye patches I was

talking about on-line after talking to her doc's office so we should

be back on treatment next week.

Thanks Marilouise,

I do think it helped her, her eye was wandering a lot and although she

had control over it, could bring it back by focusing, it was happening

more and more so we decide to do the surgery. She had the surgery in

May and we have seen the eye wander a couple times since then but they

told us that would be normal as the eyes re-adjusted themselves to the

corrected position. We go to see the dr. tomorrow for her 3 month

follow up and I'm optimistic that she will find everything as it

should be. The one thing that still nags at me is that there is

always the chance that the surgery will have not fully corrected it or

that it can re-occur and we would have to do the surgery again. Well,

I guess it is like that with every surgery. Anyway, thanks for your

input, I appreciate it and please do keep me posted on .

Thanks,
