That's probably true, but it's only because the amount of

misinformation in the medical community at large about this surgery

is huge!

The first " bypass " operation, the " Jejuno-Ileal Bypass " had

significant problems with liver damage. But that surgery was

radically different than anything done today. It bypassed all but

18 " or so of the entire small intestine! (My sister had one in 1978,

but she's been lucky so far -- knock wood!)

The problems were bad enough that they stopped doing the surgery

within a few years after my sister had it. Unfortunately, the

medical community at large just hasn't gotten the word yet. The

average doc hears about any surgery with a malabsorbtive component

and assumes the worst.

Even most bariatric surgeons don't seem to know the difference.

Go to 's site, <http://www.duodenalswitch.com>, and read the

Bob-

At Dr. Rabkins meeting last week I asked him about this because I

heard the same thing from my internist. Dr. Rabkin said that liver

problems resulted from an earlier procedure, that I believe was the

Jejunoileal Bypass. He said that liver damage is not a problem with

the current procedures.

Many doctors haven't really updated their information since then. He

offerred to speak with my doctor and discuss the procedure.

You might want to read over a summary of the various operations. Dr.

Rabkins goes over them on his website at:

http://www.pacificsurgery.com/Obesity_Surgery/History/history.html .

Bob,

Lots of experience with under-informed physicians repeating the

myth that there is a lot of liver damage. In fact, what

liver problems have been reported for the DS are very rare. I

believe that Dr. Hess, in a 10-year follow-up on 400 patients,

reported one case of liver failure.

Look at the articles by Dr. Hess.

Subject: A Bit More Research

Hi all:

Since the BPD/DS is based largely on the BPD (no DS), I thought it

might be useful to see if the plain (Scopinaro) BPD had a larger

body

of literature surrounding it than does the BPD/DS. I think that

much

of the literature regarding the plain BPD can probably be used to

formulate arguments regarding the BPD/DS, especially given that

it's

the malabsorbtive component that everybody seems to freak out

about.

Also, I'm reposting the list that somebody acquired from the ASBS,

along with two BPD/DS references they missed.

I compiled my list from MEDLINE.COM, which is a free site,

although

you have to " join " in order to use it.

I've included both pro and con articles, because if you are going

to

convince somebody in the field, you'd better know where his

arguments

are going to come from and be able to rebut them.

liver problems have been reported for the DS are very rare. I

believe that Dr.

Bob,

Aetna is using this bogus claim to deny payment of DS.

They base this on the following 2 references:

Grimm IS, Schindler W, Haluszka O. Steatohepatitis and fatal hepatic

failure after biliopancreatic diversion. Am J Gastroenterol

1992;87:775 - 79.

Langdon DE, Leffigwell T, Rank D. Hepatic failure after

biliopancreatic diversion. Am J Gastroenterol 1993;88:321.

I have the Grimm abstract, and it talks about 1 singlular case! There

have been literally thousands of BPD procedures, and this guy can

only talk about 1 case. I didn't find the abstract for the other

reference (If anyone can find it, please post it!!).

Dr. Anthone says that obease patients have deseased livers from

obiesity and that liver desease occurs it post-op (as well as pre-op

patients) patients in-spite-of, not because of surgery. The lack of

doucmentation of multiple incidences seems to confirm his point of

view.

And if the evil Aetna even dares to try to deny coverage on this

basis, they better be look out, cause I'm gonna be ready.
