Guest guest
Jayson had his 4th appointment with Dr. Ward at Pittsburgh Children's Hospital this morning. After he removed the 3rd cast and looked at the foot he was very surprised at the progress. He stated that today's cast (4th) will be the last cast before the tenotomy. We are scheduled for June 30th to have the tenotomy performed. Then he goes into his 3 week cast. The progress that Jayson has made is absolutely amazing. My only concern was that this cast was not rotated to 70 degrees but rather rotated to about 50 degrees or so. Then again, I didn't break out the protractor, and will trust the doctor. It's exciting to know that the casting is almost done. Also, Dr. Ward is taking care of obtaining the bar and shoes so that he will have them for when Jayson gets his 3 week cast off. So far, so good. I just figured I'd give an update.

Guest guest
It's amazing to see those feet responding to the casting, isn't it? I'm glad to hear things are going well for Jayson. 50 degrees for the 4th cast sounds about right. The cast applied after the tenotomy is the one that really needs to be hyper-abducted. It will almost look like the foot is pointing backwards. It looks very strange! If you haven't been asking to keep the casts, ask to keep the last one at least. For one thing, it makes a tremendous souvenir! I have all of Jonah's casts (this includes 4 months of treatment with a non-Ponseti doctor) and it was a real treat to pull them out last night (it was Jonah's 2nd birthday) and think back on all of this as he chased his big sister around the living room. If the tenotomy cast is *not* abducted as much as it should be (at least 60 degrees--and don't hesitate to pull out the protractor), Jayson may wind up with comfort issues in the FAB. So complain if you think Dr Ward isn't doing it right. Is he planning on doing the tenotomy under local or general anesthesia? You may already have visited these, but here are a couple great clubfoot resources: http://www.global-help.org/publications/cf-english.pdf http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil//index.html All our best, Naomi The Family Naomi Hannah(02/21/01) Jonah(06/20/03, bilateral clubfoot, FAB 14/7) pahunter21 wrote: Jayson had his 4th appointment with Dr. Ward at Pittsburgh Children's Hospital this morning. Guest guest
Naomi, We are keeping the casts as a matter of fact. I think I will be building a nice shadow box with a glass front showing the progression of Jayson's casts, since we really didn't a chance to get a picture of his foot before treatment. What I have in mind will end up coming out looking like a piece of art. Hopefully my artistic talents will prove to be a success. Dr. Ward is choosing to do the procedure under general anesthesia, which I'm a little worried about. I mean, he's only going to be a little over 5 weeks old. I think the hardest part is not feeding him for a few hours before the surgery. I imagine I'm preaching to the choir though. LOL! Thanks for the links. I will be sure to check them out. -BJ > Jayson had his 4th appointment with Dr. Ward at Pittsburgh Children's > Hospital this morning. Guest guest
I'm so happy to hear about Jayson's progress!! Everything you've described so far sounds just about right to me too. I love, love, love the shadow box idea!! Unfortunately, we only got to keep Livie's last cast. Did you ask Dr. Ward why he has not been certified and listed on Dr. Ponseti's website? I would love to see his name on that list if all continues to go well with Jayson's treatment! It would be wonderful to have a doctor from Pennsylvania listed. I'm sure there are countless parents who don't ever find this email list, but may see Dr. Ponseti's list, not see a doctor close to them and go the surgery route. That just makes me sad! Continued best wishes!! Jen & Livie Re: Jayson got his 4th and last cast before tenotomy! Naomi, We are keeping the casts as a matter of fact. Guest guest
, and anybody else from Pittsburgh or general area interested in contacting Dr. Ward at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh here is some info. I will also send one directly to . Here is the website for CHP's Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Ward is the Chief of Service there. From what I have gathered, he is not Ponsetti Certified, but has attended many of his seminars and follows the method to the word. I'm not sure why he isn't certified. http://www.chp.edu/clinical/03a_ortho.php (The phone number on this page can be used to contact the department and set up an appointment. Make sure you specify which Dr. you want to see) Dr. Wards Info: http://www.chp.edu/bio/03a_ortho_ward.php I have also heard that Dr. Deeney is great, but hard to get an appointment with. Dr. Deeney's Info: http://www.chp.edu/bio/03_deeny_bio.php If you have any further questions, Please let me know. Thanks, -BJ > This email was sent to me, so I am forwarding it to the group. Guest guest
, Sorry, I don't know anything about Dr. Ward, but we see Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore. He is the absolute best on the East coast. If you have already considered going to Baltimore to see Dr. H, I highly recommend sticking with that decision. I know how much easier it is to go to a doctor locally, but if you can swing the extra driving distance to get the best, it is well worth it. Just my 2 cents. Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!
