I am wondering is any of you have had to do endure more than the usual

number of castings. My son Aidan is on his 8th set of casts. After

performing his tenotomy a 3 weeks ago the Dr. said his feet were very

tight and he couldn't get the amount of correction he wanted. He

casted his feet to the position he could move them to and had us come

back the next week to have his feet re-casted. Both of these last two

procedures we're done at the hospital under general anesthesia. He was

happy with the amount of correction he got and is keeping these casts

on for 3 weeks.

We go back on the 22nd to have these removed and he plans to do 2 -3

more weekly castings before moving to the DBB. The possibility of

surgical correction has still not been ruled out. Just wondering if

any of you have had a similar scenario to Aidan's.

Thank you.

The average is 6-8 weeks of weekly casts, the tenotomy, then a 3-week cast

(one cast on for a duration of 3 weeks). Unless Aidan has a more

difficult case such as atypical, the correction should be achieved in this

amount of time. Remember too, every case is different and Aidan may just

have difficult feet. May I ask which doctor you are seeing? Is he a

qualified physician in the Ponseti method? Many doctors say they are

qualified and following the method exactly, and 12-16 cast changes later,

the feet aren't corrected and the parents are frustrated. So please keep

that in mind as well.

Lynne,

Since you're not far from Iowa City, I would recommend that you

consider going directly to Dr. P for a second opinion. You could

probably ask Dr. Noonan about going there and he shouldn't have an

issue with it either.

It seems unusual to me that Dr. Noonan needs to do so many castings

post-tenotomy, but perhaps Aidan's feet are difficult (sounds like

the Achilles isn't cooperating)....in which case, it's best to

consult with Iowa if given the opportunity.

Just my 2 cents- I don't think you'd regret the trip!

Our son went through about ten casts with a non-Ponseti doctor and

his feet still weren't corrected. He recommended major surgery!

Two months and six casts later 's feet were perfect with a

Ponseti qualified doctor.

Hi,

we had a similar problem. My son went first through a non-Ponseti

doctor (9 casts), then we switched to a Ponseti approved Doctor and

after the tenotomy that was performed he still kept going casting

saying the angle is not there yet (70 degrees). I started sending

pics to Dr Ponseti and he wrote back that it's an atypical clubfoot.

I switched my son to another doctor who had already experience with

that and he said the angle is already good for his kind of foot (60).

So you might consider just sending pictures to the expert Dr Ponseti

himself.

Good luck
