Hey everybody! It's been a while since I was on here...I'm REALLY

behind in posts. My grandfather suddenly took a turn for the worse and

died last week, and I had to fly down to FL for the funeral....all in

all it's been a crazy 2 weeks. And as we all know, missing 2 weeks of

posts means you've missed about 400!!!

Anyway, Ava is really getting around. She's such a nut! She crawls on

all 4's--on her feet & hands. She looks like some kind of little bug

or something! She even does it with her brace on, too! It's really

hysterical! But now she's started " W " sitting, which I was watching

for thanks to this group! But my question is, now that she's doing it,

how do I stop it?

Thanks!

Guinevere, on & Ava 8/4/04 RCF ABS FAB 18/7--more like 14/7

these days! :-( I'm a bad bad mommy

Hi . Sorry about your loss.

I was going to post about this today too! only 'w' sits while in

the brace. I always reposition her, but she will go right back to w. I

notice that when she is in the brace everything (toys, etc) is easier to

reach when she is up on her knees, then she just goes to her butt from her

knees. It is harder for her to reach and play with toys when she has her

feet and brace out in front of her. I think that is mostly the problem. I

need suggestions too.

Also, someone please remind me why 'w' sitting is bad.

I think this is just like any habit, studies have shown that it takes

3 weeks (21 days) to get into a habit, and the same to get out of it.

If she has only just started doing it, you'll want to get her to stop

before it becomes a habit. My suggestion would be to just keep

talking to her about it every time you see her sitting like that, and

help her move her feet back to a better position, explain that it is

not good for her feet. Do you talk to her about her brace, about why

she wears it and how important it is? I know she is still really

young to understand this but you have to start somewhere. You should

also tell all of the adults she is around to watch for it and help her

change positions when they see it. Actually, I think at her age it is

not really a big deal, someone may correct me if I am wrong. You

mention that she is hand and feet crawling, but is she crawling

regularly? Sammy is still trying to figure out the crawling thing and

he moves his legs to the " W " position when he is trying to go from

sitting to crawling. I think it is just a transition position for

him. But if he starts sitting like that I would definitely work on

discouraging it.

Also, I would make sure that the other kids are not doing it either.

Kids are so smart, if we simply teach them the reasons for what we ask

them to do they will usually do it without hesitation.

I'm not sure, but I don't think W sitting in the brace would be bad.

It was my understanding that when they W sit (no brace) that they put

their feet into the clubfoot position, i.e. turned in and pushed onto

the side of the foot, this is what makes it bad. Or am I totally

mistaken here?

Hi,

My sons PT said that " w " sitting is bad on the hips. However, if

it's not done all the time than it's OK. I'd just keep an eye on it

so that it doesn't become a habit.

Thanks!

I thought that " W " sitting was discouraged because it causes issues

with the hip sockets. It's discouraged for all kids, not just the

clubfoot kids.

" W " sitting is when the child sits on their bottom, with the top

half of the legs in front, then bends the knees and tucks the bottom

half of the legs and feet on either side of them. So if you were to

look at them from an aerial view, the shape of their legs from foot

to foot would be a " W " shape.

There are *lots* of " W sitting " conversations on this board in the

archives if someone wants to dig waaaaay back.

Crawling regularly??? HA! The kid is UNSTOPPABLE!!! The looks of

amazement on people's faces when they see her scooting along in her

FAB are priceless!!! She prefers hard floors when she has her bar on,

she can just kind of scooch/slide it along behind her. I think she

must have the shoulders of an Olympic gymnist!! When her bar is off,

she crawls normally (hands & knees) on carpets, but the instant she

hits a hard surface she's up on hands and feet! It's hysterical! And

considering we just installed laminate through the whole house, we

figure she'll be walking in no time!

Now she's started " walking " with the FAB on when you hold her hands. I

call it her " cowboy swagger " . She kind of swings a hip/leg/foot

forward, very much like those old western movies when they're about to

have a shoot-out!

I do talk to her when I put her shoes on, she's really very good about

it, unless she's REALLY tired. I've always just tried to be very

matter of fact about it, with the other kids, family & strangers.

Thanks

It makes sense to me...it seems like there would be unnatural

pressure & pulling sideways of the knees and hips, and with the

brace off it forces the feet into a clubfoot type position like

someone said. I can see why it's discouraged. Ava does it because

she's crawling around and when she stops she just sits back.

Yesterday she was reaching for the dogs bowl and I shooed her away

(I was already cleaning up the first spill she made!) so she did

just that--sat back on her heels. She's only done it a few

times...of course, the first time was her last check up right as the

doctor walked in, she sat back just on her CF side and squished the

foot up! I knew it was bad, but before I could even move her the

doctor walked in & saw it right away!!! " No no mommy, she CAN'T do

this...very bad! " Did I feel like a smacked bottom or what!!???!

brace off it forces the feet into a clubfoot type position like

someone said.
