Guest guest
For those who have used slings, pouches, etc. are there any that work for a very young infant? In the next few weeks, it looks like we may be adopting a newborn and then moving across the country within a week or two. Right now the plan is that I will fly with two year old and newborn, DH follows w/car. I think I will need as many free hands as possible... thanks for any advice. Guest guest
Note that what I'm about to say is purely my opinion and experience. Others may feel differently. I've raised 4 kids now through their first year and this is what I've discovered. Newborns really do best in a cuddly/stretchy wrap or stretchy sling. I LOVE my moby but there are several other brands that are just the same and some that have a padded area where the baby is as well. I didn't use a sling with my infants unless I was only going to be wearing them for a short time or to get them used to the change as they grew. As they age and can sit up, you might begin to prefer a wrap or sling made of none stretchy or only slightly stretchy material. I LOVE my maya wrap. The material is thin and easy to use. There are many brands out now as well as many WAHM who make them. And as they get heavier, a mei tai or onbuhimo seem to be what most people prefer. I have several MT's and I think my favorites are a sachi and a freehand. I also have a pakka which has the straps sewn all the way through for those of you who worry about only being sewn at the corners but honestly I haven't noticed that it makes any difference. Almost any carrier/sling/wrap/MT/etc. that is sold on the is categorized on www.thebabywearer.com and it has wonderful resources regarding making your own and purchasing used. And there is a forum there that is very helpful. There is also a swap group on yahoo - babywearingswap I believe but you can find it easily with a search if that isn't it. There you will find used wraps along with lots of assistance. If you'd like any more info please feel free to ask. I strongly believe babywearing makes for happier babies and helps us get more accomplished in the end. Chris Re: Casts and slings? Guest guest
oh and I forgot to add that you can do a double carry - the 2 year old, if not too heavy can be worn in a MT on your back while you put the infant in a front carry MT. I've done this but I used a wrap first for the newborn and then MT'd my older on my back with the rucksack carry. I managed to do a long shopping trip this way a few times. When they are used to being carried, they prefer it over a stroller but sometimes I take the stroller just to carry 'stuff' and in case my older wanted to ride for awhile. Chris Re: Casts and slings? Guest guest
wait.. is the new baby CF too? Will baby have casts or is Zeke in casts? At any rate, I used the sling with all mine. They held their heads up early so we did the front pack type carry most of the time. A 2 year old and an infant... my opinion?... a must! lol... It's not easy, but you can nurse an infant or let them sleep against you while you change diapers on the older babe with a sling. Trust me, this is a good thing! Also, since you're adopting this little one I can't imagine a better way to bond and be close to the babe than to sling him/her as much as possible. Lots of different kinds of slings and packs, just find the one that seems to work for you. People do love the Maya wrap though I never used one. I made my slings, and padded the rails. I had plans of making one without padding to see how it worked (which is pretty much what the Maya is I figure) but I never did. Good luck and congrats on that new little one! Tell us more about all this, what an exciting time with the move and all. Sounds crazy and fun! Guest guest
Thanks and Kori, I'll look up the websites (I looked up the earlier ones too) today. As far as we know, the new baby does not have club foot and Zeke is nights only now (hence the OT). Mostly I'm trying to figure out how to transport two little ones by myself for one long airplane trip. It is a crazy time, working, fixing up the house, selling the house, packing, etc. and trying to find time to say goodbye. I should have known something more would be coming up when friends decided to buy the house (no realtors, no showings, hooray it has been smooth and easy). This new baby boy just kind of dropped into our lives last week as a big surprise; after a couple of days of 'what are we thinking?' we decided to go for it, and now we are waiting, with a due date of June 12. Although with adoption one never really knows what will happen until all the paperwork is in place, it is amazing how quickly your heart can go out to a little one. This is in many ways amazing timing; we've been pursuing another foreign adoption but that has stalled for at least another year, we really wanted another boy so the two could grow up and be buds for each other, Zeke is at a very kid friendly stage, I'm just about to stop working (and I've been wondering what to do with myself, ha ha)...as our pastor says, this is definitely a God thing. I'd never considered wearing two babies at one time! Zeke is around 35 lb. and wiggly, so I'm thinking I will backpack supplies and have him walk/run. (He's never been a stroller boy) Thanks for the tips and any future advice! Caroline, mom to Zeke, 26 mos, bcf, Dr. Ponseti

Guest guest
Caroline, CONGRATULATIONS! What a blessing! Have you thought about getting one of those combination carseat/stroller units for your flight? Even though Zeke isn't a " stroller guy " , maybe he'd tolerate something like this since it's a carseat- more comfy and not as restrictive? Here's a link to one at One Step Ahead (pricey in my opinion, but might be worth the investment for your trip (if you don't have a direct flight especially) and then you can resell it?! Or maybe there are others on E-bay or other retailers) http://www.onestepahead.com/product/27209/291755/117.html It will work for both the baby and Zeke- As far as backpacks go- I'm in love with my Land's End backpack diaperbag......it's a lifesaver as far as dealing with my running 2 year old and the baby. And it has a great changing pad. Please keep us posted! I'm so happy for you! & (3-16-00, left clubfoot) > Thanks and Kori, I'll look up the websites (I looked up the > earlier ones too) today. Guest guest
> Caroline, What wonderful news! I am so happy for you and all the blessings coming your way. I have read about a Baby B'aire vest which would help with Zeke on the plane, but wouldn't really solve the transportation issue. Perhaps a family friend would be willing to travel with you and help out?
