Yes, there are others who have had a Ponseti doctor (even a " Ponseti

recommended " doctor) tell them to reduce from 23/7 straight to 12/7. However,

this is NOT the Ponseti protocol, which calls for a far less drastic reduction

at first: 18/7 for some time, then 16/7, then 14/7 once the baby is walking.

There's a note someone forwarded to the group from Dr Ponseti detailing this,

I'll fish it out and send it to you ( I believe it's in the files section).

Quite a few children have even had a hard time transitioning so quickly (started

fighting the shoes at night because they were getting used to all that freedom

during the day). Parents have found it effective to solve this by going back to

23/7 and reducing the hours gradually down from that.

So, did you get some of the newest Markells? Jay Markell posted a while back

about them. My impression was not that they had no heels, but rather a hole cut

out in the heel area so that parents can make sure their baby's heels are all

the way down in the shoe. They were to be available in the smallest sizes up to

a 1, IIRC. If you got some, I would love to see a picture.

reduce so quickly and don't plan to. I was wondering if any others who go to a

recommended Ponseti doctor have been told to reduce this much.

On a side note, we had to get a new pair of shoes, so I asked about the

Markell's with no heel. I didn't know if they were going to make them. He said

they had them in the office there. Did anyone else know they were making them?

grace was told by her non-ponseti dr to reduce this

quick also.. and her feet relapsed.. not saying that

will happen to little carter.. but i am a little

over-cautious about reducing so quickly.. i have gone

from 23 to 18 to 16 to 14 (this week to 14 YEAH) and

grace has adapted very easily.. and her feet are

wonderful... i have read several times also about

parents that reduced dramatically and quickly and it

caused sleeping problems in the little ones.. i think

(key word there is " i think " lol) that it's almost

like a love/hate relationship... they hate the

restrictions.. but at the same time that's all they

know.. when that " security " it gone all of a sudden i

imagine it's like taking the bottle or binkey away...

but that's just my thoughts.. i have had very good

outcomes with reducing slowly.. even 2 hours a week

maybe.. i did 2 hours evety about 3 weeks with grace..

Hi

I actually had the same situation happen. My daughter went through all of the

casting and then the tenotomy, full time shoes for 3 months then went to 12

hours a day and she did tolerate the shoes for the full time period but then

after 3 nights of the 12 hours only she wouldn't do it... she would scream

bloody murder until the second the shoes came off. We thought she was just

really liking her freedom and it wasn't until I found this website that I

realized that she could have relapsed and her foot was actually hurting her. We

would keep trying to keep them on but it got to be very difficult and we went

back to the doctor (who did train with Dr. Ponsetti himself) and she kept

encouraging us to keep the shoes on and checked her foot but that was about it.

She didn't seem to think it was because her foot relapsed but we don't know what

else it would be. So we thought at that point that our only option was to do

surgery.... until I found this website and they have all talked me into

starting over with casting... so we did and now it is fully corrected again and

we just did the tenotomy. So basically I am telling you to make sure and

gradually decrease the time because you don't want to start over again if you

don't have to. I am so thankful that I did but we could have been alot further

along at this point.

I hope this makes sense... I, of course, said something to the doctor (who is

highly recommended) and she said she was following the protocol with the

reduction but is now suggesting that patients gradually reduce to make sure that

doesn't happen to them.

Go with your gut instinct... just as you are and slowly reduce!!!

Best wishes for a successful treatment..

Our doctor just told us the same thing as well, but that we could do

that in a another month. Aleksander just finished his second month

full-time in the shoes. She just said after the end of that month,

since he is sleeping around 12 hours a night now, that we could

reduce him down to that.

When I asked her about that, she said that definitely we should do

it gradually, but didn't give much more information beyond that.

She is also recommended by Ponsetti.

Thanks all for your help! I reduced to 18 hours a month ago. I thought I would

reduce one hour more every two weeks or so and see how that goes! His

development is progressing so much more with more freedom. I know that it

usually doesn't hinder their development, but has tight muscles in his

shoulders, neck, and legs that are much easier stretched as well as less

restricted with the shoes off. He is finally starting to be able to push up

with his arms! YEAH!

I didn't get the shoes this time because I had a prescription written for the

others and I didn't know they were available, but I hope they are available in

bigger sizes next time we have to purchase shoes!

Re: reducing hours

Yes, there are others who have had a Ponseti doctor (even a " Ponseti

this is NOT the Ponseti protocol, which calls for a far less drastic reduction

at first: 18/7 for some time, then 16/7, then 14/7 once the baby is walking.

Markell's with no heel. I didn't know if they were going to make them. He said

they had them in the office there. Did anyone else know they were making them?

I didn't get the shoes this time because I had a prescription written for the

others and I didn't know they were available, but I hope they are available in

bigger sizes next time we have to purchase shoes!

Re: reducing hours

Yes, there are others who have had a Ponseti doctor (even a " Ponseti

recommended " doctor) tell them to reduce from 23/7 straight to 12/7. However,

this is NOT the Ponseti protocol, which calls for a far less drastic reduction

at first: 18/7 for some time, then 16/7, then 14/7 once the baby is walking.

We just got back from our doctor who told us we could reduce from 23 to 12 or so

hours/ day. She is recommended by Dr. Ponseti himself, so I know she is very

good. Plus, there are others on here who have gone to her. I am tentative to

reduce so quickly and don't plan to. I was wondering if any others who go to a

recommended Ponseti doctor have been told to reduce this much.

On a side note, we had to get a new pair of shoes, so I asked about the

Markell's with no heel. I didn't know if they were going to make them. He said
