Carseat Sleeping?

Hey,

I am jumping in here. Christian has found that sleeping on his side with

his legs leaning over the front (almost like if he were sleeping on his

tummy) to be the most comfortable. As weird as this position sounds it

actually looks comfy too! Maybe you can see if he would like something like

that.

Re: Carseat Sleeping?

I might sound like an idiot but I am trying to figure out

logistically how sleeping on his side would work. Wouldn't one leg

be way up in the air and the other on the mattress?

I think I will try the carseat until I am confidant in his ability

to sleep on his tummy (right now when on his tummy he doesn't turn

his head to the side, only buries it in the mattress!)

Sorry about all the questions, I am just getting frustrated with the

lack of sleep!

My son is really having a hard time sleeping at night with his shoes

on. I know they are on correctly because he is happy as a clam all day

long. I have tried putting a rolled up towel under his knees or a

pillow under his feet but he either pushes it away or uses his legs

and pushes himself off of the pillow or towel. I think he just shifts

at night and the weight on his hips and knees seems to really make him

shout in pain, he is up at least once every hour or so. I was thinking

that the carseat could be a good alternative because it would take the

weight off the hips and knees. Has anyone else had to do this? Or have

any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Kate,

How old is your son? Have you tried a side positioning pillow? The

car seat works for lots of babies, some without clubfeet. Also, the

length of the bar sounds like it could be an issue. Even if he is

happy during the day, if he is uncomfortable at night it could be the

bar is too short.

Thanks . My son, Jude, is almost 4 months old and quite a big

boy (almost 17 pds!) He just had his bar length extended so I am

sure that is not it. I am interested in the side positioning pillow,

what is it and how does it work? THANKS!

This worked for my daughter. But may have a point. The bar may be too

short if he is uncomfortable at night. I tried the side sleeper thing, but the

carseat worked better. But the bar may be too short. It was in my daughter's

case. We found tat out when we sought a second opinion from another doctor.

Kate,

Both of my kids slept in their carseats (in fact, my husband had the infant seat

rigged so we could hang it on a rope from the ceiling right next to our bed and

rock the baby when she/he stirred at night--it was great!). I think it helped

quite a bit when Jonah was in casts and then in the FAB to alleviate some of the

pressure on his knees and hips. He now sleeps mostly on his back with a pillow

under his head and his knees bent. I don't recommend a pillow for such a young

fellow as yours, though.

Kate,

There are several types of propping pillows on the market, they are

not usually recommended for newborns (that's why I asked how old he

is) due to the " back to sleep " thing, but should work fine for Jude's

age. Anyway, the type I have seen most often is just a foam wedge

covered in material which you can prop him up against so that he is

sleeping on his side. Now with the brace you may need another pillow

of some kind to prop his legs (front and/or back) so the brace doesn't

flop over. I know that they want babies to sleep on their backs but

you could also try letting him sleep on his tummy, some parents have

found that works as well. One other thing to consider since you say

he just had his bar lengthened is that it could be too long instead of

too short. There has been a lot of discussion on this group about

what the " official " correct way of measuring bar length is and I think

it has been determined that the " right " length is " roughly " heel to

heel same as shoulder width but most importantly -- whatever is

comfortable for your baby. If Jude was sleeping okay before he had

the bar adjusted I would definitely consider this as the culprit for

him not sleeping now.

i have to agree with allison here... i slept grace on her belly from the time

she was about 6 weeks old.. and don't get me wrong.. i was freaked out the whole

time... until she was able to get up on her elbows.. but she was not able to get

gas out because of not pulling her knees up to her due to the casts.. so she had

belly aches all the time.. she would cry and cry and i would put her on the

floor or bed on her belly.. and she would be fighting mad but would pass gas

over and over.. and when i got her up she was ok for several hours.. so after

about a week i slept her on her tummy and the crying greatly reduced... and

she's been a belly sleepers ever since.. then at the same time.. if something

about his treatment is adjusted and right after that he starts to develop

sleeping problems.. i would definitly look to the adjustment... a second trip to

the doctor for another measurement can't hurt.. and everyone makes mistakes.. he

may have measured wrong.. who knows.. but it might save

you and your little one lots of sleepless nights...

I was just going to pipe in and say that my son's bar was set too

long, and now that it has been shortened, he's much happier! He

didn't have problems like your's, but it is amazing how much of a

difference the bar length can make! He's much more agile and can

move so much more easily.

Of course, now we're having problems with the shoes causing creases

in his feet so we have to go back for that!

Sometimes I wish I had supplies to just fix things myself!

Sorry about all the questions, I am just getting frustrated with the

lack of sleep!

yup! :~} totally doable. When he's bigger, he'll do it himself and hold

it up for hours lol! Then there's those kids who sleep with their feet up

by their head with the brace on, so crazy! (my Darbi doesn't do that,

never has actually) Just put the pillow behind his legs, and lean him back

on it a little. It'll hold the brace up and keep him on his side at the

same time.

Watch out for the carseat sleeping, it's not a bad idea... just don't let

him get too hooked on it or you'll be sleepless trying to get him to sleep

in another spot too. :~}

Are you nursing? If so, how about taking him to your bed so you can get

some sleep? Best thing I ever did... I have really never been sleep

deprived and after having a CF child, would not want to try it any other

way with them waking so often in the brace (at times).

With that said... Darbi has been sleeping in her own room, in her own bed

(a convertible crib set up as a daybed I got off Freecycle, incidentally

from a mom of a CF 3 year old), most of the night for about 4 nights

now. And also a couple of nights before this past weekend when she was at

my parents for 2 nights (that in itself is a first!). She gets up at 3 am

and I take her to my bed to nurse, once she slept till 5am though. So

THAT'S a big deal around here! lol... it's still too early though... She

took to it all too well. I miss her little body in bed with me, it's a

little early for it if you ask me but we had the crib (our first, only took

7 years and 3 children who aren't babies anymore!) and the room so it got

set up and tried out. She seems to like it till about 3am lol! She's

still night nursing though... other than that one night she slept till

5am. We shall see...

Sorry this turned into all about me. I tend to do that, especially if I

haven't posted in a while. So much to say, so little time to say it.

You will be very surprised at some of the strange way these babies

sleep! My son rolls on his side and sleeps with his one leg up in

the air all the time. Either that or he'll lift them up when he's on

his back and sleep with his feet up by his head. I have no idea how

he's comfortable like that, but whatever works! And we don't have

any pillows or anything in his crib at all.

My baby sleeps on his side as well! This has been going on for the past couple

of weeks. (Although, when he was just in his cast, his side was his preference

when he slept.) He's been in the FAB since the end of March. At first I teared

up when I saw him that way, thinking, " How can he possibly be comfortable? My

poor baby! " But, since that's how he likes to sleep, then I will not bother

him. He actually kind of rests the foot that is up in the air on the bumper pad

that he is facing. He has never slept on his tummy because he also just buries

his face in the mattress or floor whenever he is on his tummy. It's nuts that

we were all tummy-sleepers yet many of our babies don't know what to do with

themselves while on their tummies.
