Guest guest
Hi everyone - Does anyone know the statistics for: 1) The chance of a subsequent child being born with clubfoot if your first child has clubfoot? 2) The chance of a child being born with clubfoot if you or your spouse was born with clubfoot? Also, does it matter if the first instance of clubfoot was a result of genetics or fetal development? Thanks - I really appreciate any information you may have on this issue. Guest guest
1) The chance of a subsequent child being born with clubfoot if your first child has clubfoot? A 1964 study in England found this to be 1 in 35. 2) The chance of a child being born with clubfoot if you or your spouse was born with clubfoot? If one parent is affected, it is 3-4%. If both parents are affected, it is 15%. While there are some conditions presumably caused by abnormal position of the fetus in the uterus (such conditions usually resolve on their own very quickly), I think it is generally agreed today that congenital clubfoot is not caused by cramped quarters or funny positioning. There's still quite a bit of debate about how clubfoot happens, but it's generally agreed that the underlying cause is purely genetic. Hope this helps some. I'm happy to try and answer any other specific questions you might have as well.
