Guest guest
Hi, My son has been taking coromega 2 packets a day for almost 2 years. I am considering switching to eyeQ to see if we get a better response. Does anyone have suggestions on which EyeQ product to use. I am looking at the eye q smooth as it seems to be the consistency of coromega. Thanks for your advice. --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Guest guest
Yes, I'd be interested to know as well. I know there are plenty of people on this line who prefer the Coromega over NN or EyeQ. We've used NN products for years but I'm considering changing as well - we've had great success with the NN products but I feel as if Josh as plateaued. In the past, I've either reduced the amount of NN, then went back to the full amount and saw surges but there has not been one after this last reduction/return. I did get a box of Coromega packets and tried them over the weekend (we were traveling - must admit the packets are much easier to deal with when traveling!) but I will be using up the last of the NN (Complete 3-6-9) as I switch over to the packets only. Since I do give extra EPA, I'll likely continue giving him the additional capsules of EPA and gamma's - the Coromega does not have an equivalent amount of EPA to what Josh has been getting. BTW - I had a long conversation with the salesperson at the Vitamin Shoppe where I get my stuff on occasion (I have a great guy at the health food store and the guy at the Shoppe - sometimes they disagree in their advice). He said that, since Coromega has a faster absorption rate, more of it stays in a person's system - gets there sooner and stays longer. According to him, and the box, since the absorption rate is just about 3 times faster than other fish oil products, you'd wind up using less of it and saving money in the long run. I'm not in this to " save money in the long run " but does the absorption rate issue make sense to other people? Guest guest
I have used the Eye Q Smooth, and my child does like the taste. I have read on this forum (very old posts, I believe) that some have used Eye Q and have had success. The Eye Q doesn't have the exact formula that ProEFA has (I believe that EPA/DHA ratio is different. Eye Q has its GLA from evening primrose instead of borage oil.) We are in the United States, and have it shipped from England. I wanted to mention that some of packets separated, so they were oily, and not really usable. The company was kind enough to replace them (which was great because having it shipped from England is pricey -- usless, of course, you are in England). I believe it is cheaper and perhaps better (any opinions??????) to go with ProEFA if you can get your child to take it. My child now swalows capsules so when I run out of Eye Q Smooth, I am probably going to go with ProEFA, and I am wondering if I might see more improvement on the " exact " right formula (again, any opinions?). I know that you want Omega 3 (higher EPA than DHA) AND a little bit of Omega 6 -- what I am unsure about is how important it is to use the precisely " correct " the ratio of EPA to DHA to GLA. Having said all that, I did a lot of research on Equazen and do believe it is a pure, quality fish oil, like Nordic Naturals. > > > > Hi, > > > > My son has been taking coromega 2 packets a day for almost 2 > years. Guest guest
Sherry let me know what formula you have your child on now -and what dosage as well. And how old is your son now? Coromega over the years has been the best pure Omega 3 but not as good for most who tried it as the Omega 3/6 formulas. I searched through the archives and find most stop Coromega to start ProEFA - rare the other way so yes please let us know what changes you notice. As we all know the changes are pretty quick. Sara (I put her email there -from the archives) is giving two boxes of the Coromega away -for free -now her child's on 369/ProEFA so she's one that used both and I guess likes the NN better. I do know over the years that ProEFA and EyeQ are about the same in effectiveness -but most from the US buy NN and most from the UK buy the EyeQ for cost/shipping reasons. Both ProEFA and EyeQ appear to be a bit better than Efalex. And Sherry you are doing the same thing as the parent below. Coromega and ProEPA -that's just two versions of the same pure Omega 3 high EPA formula. If anything I'd mix the ProEFA (which has Omega 6)with the Coromega -not the ProEPA. So ProEFA with ProEPA or ProEFA with Coromega -which ever one has higher EPA. See below -the mom giving her child both Coromega and ProEPA (same thing -high EPA -pure Omega 3) says her child is a nonresponder -but who knows since my child and most others didn't respond to pure Omega 3 either? Then again - without the 6 -your best chance is with high EPA. And not to go off on another oil -but for those with children on cod liver oil or CLO or DHA Jr (all the same thing) you can't do high dosages due to the natural vitamin A and most CLO is higher DHA -and EPA appears to be the better Omega 3 to raise. Below are some archives -if anyone finds any others that shed light on this topic please post them. There isn't much. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~start of archives hi i have two boxes of coromega that have not expired. we are using omega 369 and other stuff and not using these. if you want to pick them up in north brunswick, they are yours. sara " Sara " sblny@... Re: Coromega & ? Initially we tried Coromega but my child is a resistant eater and it's easier for me to give him the Nordic Naturals oils in an oral medicine syringe. The oils are easier for him to swallow. Because Coromega is thick he was able to spit it out; it also triggered his gag reflex. > > ...Thankyou for responding. " Most of our experience is with one, 1.0 gram capsule of ProEFA (Complete Omega) that contains 144 mg EPA, 99 mg DHA and 40 mg of GLA. We know that this combination appeared to work well. There were some other supplements used but we could not conclude anything about them. I can only say that both EPA and DHA are important and GLA appears to have an additional positive effect on speech. ALA, linoleic and oleic acids in " The Total Omega " contribute very little to the EPA, DHA, and GLA effect. I see at least 2 possibilities that you could use if you decide to make the transition from short-chain omega-3s in plants (flax seed oil containing alpha-linolenic acid or ALA, C18:2n-3) to the long- chain mixture of EPA (C20:5n-3) and DHA (C22:6n-3). These are DHA Jr. (30 mg DHA and 20 mg EPA in a serving unit) and Coromega (350 mg EPA and 230 mg DHA). Both of these have been anecdotally successful in the past. Coromega can be divided in two and taken one half in the morning the other in the evening. If you choose this mode you will provide your son with the equivalent EPA+DHA of 2 ProEFA capsules per day without the GLA. Flax seed oil or freshly ground flax seeds are an excellent source of the essential omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA or LNA) which is the quintessential parent member of the omega-3 family of essential fatty acids (EFAs). The body transforms it into EPA and the EPA into DHA. This transformation is very inefficient (the yield is about 10%) and is further inhibited by over consumption of omega-6 fatty acids from most vegetable oils or certain disease states. Therefore, it is advisable to independently consume also ready made EPA and DHA from good quality fish of from high quality fish oil supplements. Some recommended intakes are listed on the Introductory lecture on EFAs that I gave at the First Conference on Therapy of Verbal Apraxia, July 23-24, 2001, town, NJ. ( http://www.cherab.org/news/scientific.html ) The CHERAB Foundation's positive research results on potential improvement in speech following EFA supplementation are based on the use of ProEFA (Complete Omega) and that contains also another essential fatty acid, GLA which is an omega-6 fatty acid. The latter appears to be beneficial to children with apraxia. It is not present in flax seed/flaxseed oil. None of these materials present with any known side effects or known toxicity in an otherwise healthy person. Nevertheless, we advise every user of supplements to use them under medical supervision. We don't know your child and we cannot provide you with medical advice. Sincerely, Katz, Ph.D. " http://www.cherab.org/information/indexinformation.html#diet ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =====
Guest guest
Is there something about coromega that makes it better for autistics rather than apraxics and the 3/6 better for apraxics? I need to figure out 's " formula " for lack of a better term. > > > > ...Thankyou for responding. I was beginning to think no > one else used Coromega. How much Vit E are you giving. Guest guest
Hi - Josh is going to be 10 in May - time really flies considering I've been in this group, OMG, going on 6 years now! We started Josh on NN on July 27, 2002, if memory serves! Wow, this line has seen me and Josh through quite a bit over these almost six years! Right now, until I run out of NN product, Josh is taking - between the Complete Omega 3-6-9 and additional EPA, and a separate d-gamma supplement - a total of 1100mg EPA, 550mg DHA, 377mg other 3's, 165mg GLA, 471mg OA, 460IU Vit.E, 440 d-gamma, and 125mg d-beta and delta tocopherols. I know I'm a bit more on the conservative side dosage-wise, but this is what I've been able to work to/maintain without behavior issues creeping in (or bloody noses from too many IUs of Vit. E). And, as I wrote, Josh has been on a plateau for awhile now. The Coromega is significantly less. The Coromega alone (one packet) is 350mg EPA, 250mg DHA, 650mg other long-chain 3's, and only 3IU of Vit. E. I'll continue with the additional EPA so totals with that will be 775mg EPA, 350mg DHA, 740mg other 3's, 71mg OA, 430IU Vit.E, 440 d-gamma, and 125mg d-beta and delta tocopherols. It will be much heavier on the " other 3's " so it will be interesting to see what the results will be. I could probably give two packets of the Coromega to bring the EPA back up but it will also raise the " other 3's " even more and I'm not sure about that. Or I could double the NN EPA capsules to increase the EPA and a little increase in the DHA without significantly increasing the " other 3's. " The absence of GLA will be interesting to see. As with increasing dosages before with NN products, I'll take it pretty slowly to see what effects there are. My primary question about Coromega (along with the dosage shift/change) is whether the absorption issue has any effect on the amount that is necessary to see the kind of results I have been seeing (when Josh is not on a plateau). If the omega-3's in Coromega are absorbed 3 times faster than NN, for example, does that mean they stay in the system that much longer as well? How long does fish oil remain in the system and does the " 3 times faster " absorption rate matter in the long run? Do those questions make sense? With all that said, however, I need to stop all fish oils and vitamin E's on March 1 - Josh is going in for a tonsillectomy on March 19 and all of this needs to stop since it will tend to act as a blood thinner. So, I'll likely stick with NN until March 1, stop everything, and when he recovers, I'll make the switch (temporarily? permanently?) to Coromega. I'll be sure to keep everyone up to date on what happens. Thanks, - I've learned so much from the people on this line over these years - subjects have run the gamut, some relevant to Josh, some not, some just interesting to read about, but I am most thankful I was able to find this group - it has helped me learn, grow, keep myself grounded through some rough spots, and, most of all, it has helped Josh immensely. When we started, he had one syllable - " ba " - for everything. Without increasing speech therapy, he started on the fish oils and started saying words within 3 weeks. With speech therapy, he has proved " the evil doc " wrong again and again - his vocabulary is huge, his intelligibility has come along in strides, and he has the confidence to actually stand in front of his class and do a " book report. " There seems to be a thread going knocking the breadth of subjects this line covers. As with others who have written, if it doesn't apply to you, delete it. But don't always brush off the subject either since you never know when you can glean some nugget from someone else's experiences and apply it to your own situation. There are many times I'll see a subject line that I don't find interesting and, I admit, I just delete it without reading it. But most times I at least scan through posts, many times responding or sticking in my two cents ;-). We're all always learning here, and in life, and everyone is entitled to voice their opinions, experiences, lessons, suggestions - the reader has the option of listening to them or simply, as with television, turning it off.
