Guest guest
Buckle your seat belt, Glenda :-) Here we go!! Now, you'll have to be still for the next 5+ hours while we fly across the Pacific Ocean. Can you do it? Okay, you've been flying all day which seems like at least two days and then they tell you it's only noon after you adjust your watch by two hours. This is going to be a long day....You gradually notice that the plane is starting its decent and start looking out the window. Pretty soon you see the most beautiful aquamarine ocean that you have ever seen! How come they don't look like this on the Washington and Oregon coast? They are wonderful in their own right, but I have never seen the water so blue! It looks just like the color of a swimming pool....only in ten different shades....each more beautiful than the next. Welcome to Honolulu! Look at all the hotels and the palm trees intermingled with all of the tropical flora. If you're stopping in Honolulu, get ready for shopping central! It's the home of the Ala Moana Mall.....open to the great outdoors, but still sheltered from the warm rain showers that might happen by. The birds fly in and out and Honolulu is home to 80% of the population of the state of Hawaii...not counting the happy tourists who are everywhere! Honolulu has everything to offer.....business and industry, tourism and lots of recreation. Alas, it is a little too busy for our tastes....the freeway driving can be just like any big city....only with palm trees :-) We'll wait at the Honolulu airport for our flight to Maui. Okay...I guess we can get on one more airplane.....this flight only lasts about a half an hour. Here we go......we get to see that beautiful ocean again! Each island has such variety and personality! There are deserts, mountains, lava rock formations and lush green areas.....all in one! Maui has it all! There's a mountain called Haleakala (holly ah' ka la) and you can drive all the way to the top.......of the world!!! After driving on a slowly winding road.....you find yourself above the clouds and are surprised that it is cold up here!!! but beautiful and peaceful....more than a photograph can capture. Coming down the mountain, you are awestruck at all of the tropical beauty and happy to feel the warmth once again. There are pineapple fields for miles. Guess what? It's only two o'clock in the afternoon.....but you think it is much later. On the drive to the condominium (there are lots of condominiums in Hawaii.....I think they were invented here :-) you see lots of familiar sites......people going through their normal routines, living in local neighborhoods with familiar stores......Costco, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot, intermingled with the smaller, more personable stores that have been around for many years. There are so many things to do!!!! There are luaus, scuba dives, snorkeling, whale watching expeditions and more. You can do them all or you can choose to just enjoy the atmosphere, take in the smell of the flowers, and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach....and more than a few good restaurants, too :-) There is such a feeling of history intermingled with the new mega-hotels. The area in Lahaina Town was once a whaling port, and at the old courthouse by the 100 year old banyan tree you can just imagine all of the trials and tribulations that must have befallen some of the sailors. Further down the road at Ka' anapoli (kah on' ah polly) you see the magnificent and more magnificent hotels.....I wouldn't even want to guess how much they cost to build!! Each is more spectacular than the next! There are waterfalls and pools, marble floors and priceless artwork....and of course magnificent restaurants to please every taste. We splurge and dine on a special champagne brunch at the Maui Westin. I wish we could stay there! but our condominium is more than adequate.....it could easily house us all year!! or forever!! Finally this wonderful day must end and it is a somewhat respectable time to get into bed......is it really only 8 o'clock? Listening to the rhythm of the ocean waves, you fall soundly asleep. After a restful sleep, you'll be up before daybreak.....but you'll get to see the sunrise and it's a beautiful site, gently illuminating the ocean that you can hear, but can't quite see in the darkness of the dawn. Are you ready for a new day, Glenda? Where should we eat?? :-) Enjoy~ Connie > Connie> Oh please tell us all about the fun you had please!
