Guest guest
I don't know the law/guidelines in respect to disallowing services. I do know that speech service will be needed to train the school staff/your family/your son to use the device they are suggesting. Also, depending on your child's complexity of communication - I would suggest that they bring in a consultant that deals with finding the right assistive communication device for a child and not just throw a device they " think " is right at the child. These folks in the room did not sound, to me, like experts on assistive communication. I do not think the window of opportunity closes - ever. My son is younger than your's, but is severely apraxic but wanting to communicate - causing many issues. He also is very small and weak - we brought in the consultant and she gave her recommendation and it's been working out pretty well, but it's very complex, it's a new way of communicating for everyone and I feel, that it compelled my son to speak even more than before. They are suggesting an alternative way for your child to communicate and it should be taken advantage of b/c it will tie him more closely with the world and you and (our big reason) the community. Our speech therapist was the one that implemented the training of the teachers, programming the unit, teaching him how to use it in a meaningful way (playing games, making requests, identifying pictures) --- and that deserves at least 90 minutes a week. It's a big job. As for actual speech therapy that continues to work on verbal abilities and the law- I am hoping someone else will chime in. I do think before a school official claims " case closed " an outside evaluation should be considered. And the school will be the ones to pay for that. Hang in there, > > I got a call from the county class principal today. She has scheduled > an meeting to discuss my concerns about Mickie. > > What do I do now? Guest guest
Wow, I did not realize the ability of the devices to add to verbal skills. Great stuff. I agree, the window is never closed. Morally I do not believe the school should have the ability to close that window. Not sure what the law says.
