Thanks, everyone for responding to my post regarding how long until I see die

off from Nystatin.

Today my boys received three doses of 1/2 teaspoon. Tomorrow they will be at

four doses which will equal 1 million units of nystatin (I think) What doses

has anyone else used that was effective?

I have been wearing myself out trying to figure out how to give nystatin four

times per day and then probiotics and S Boulardii three hours away from

nystatin. I would have to dose the probiotic in their sleep. Do I just hold

off on probiotics while giving nystatin and then start back full force

afterwards?

Help!

If " S Boulardii " is Saccharomyces Boulardii lyo, don't bother giving

it during Nystatin or any other prescription anti-yeast treatment --

that is the good yeast I have previously referred to. Nystatin will

kill it, making it pointless.

Probiotics are another story entirely. They are bacteria, not yeast,

and will not be affected by the anti-yeast treatment. The only time

giving probiotics is ambiguous is when you are on antibiotics. Some

people don't bother with them during treatment, and some give double

the dose away from the antibiotic and for two weeks after treatment

ends. This is a little bit of guesswork.

Regarding the Nystatin four times per day, we had A LOT of difficulty

getting it into Tyler four times. (At first he wouldn't take it at

all.) The nurse at our DAN's office said that if we could only do it

twice per day, then just do 2 tsps. 2X instead. That's what we did.

The Diflucan is much easier -- it's a tiny amount once per day, and

it's supposed to be stronger.

Hope that helps!

Based on our experience with candida-fighting, it is standard practice

to use probiotics during anti-fungal treatments...just not at the same

moment of the day. S Boulardii is Saccharomyces Boulardii which is a

probiotic. There are, obviously, exceptions to the general usage rules,

depending on what is being treated and the needs of the individual patient.

If you give any probiotic at the same exact time of day as you dose the

antifungal (or antibiotic) the probiotic dose could have a reduced

effect, but giving it at a timed interval away from the antifungal on an

empty stomach shouldn't cause a major problem. It does get trickier

with a four-time-a day dose of Nystatin, from a timing point of view,

not for other reasons...IMO.

As for probiotics with antibiotic cycles, some docs recommend to give

the probiotics half way between the doses of antibiotics...for example

if 2 doses a day of antibiotics, give the probiotics at the 6 hr mark

between the two doses...that has always worked well for us.

But if you kill the yeast without replenishing the good bacteria to take

it's place, then regrowth of the yeast is much more possible, as is the

growth of " bad " bacteria, prolonging the overall treatment protocol.

Thanks for the information. Our DAN said that the S Boulardii is

both a probiotic and vulnerable to the Nystatin, but we have other

probiotics going as well.
