I would get the cards but also try a speech therapist. If your daughter has any

oral motor issues, they can help with that. While my son didn't get any words

from speech therapy his oral motor skills really advanced. He learned to take

small bites, chew correctly and drink from a straw. Oral motor is really

important for speech. I am just starting to use my cards wiht my son as he

finally is trying to say words.

myself instead of using a speech therapist? Any thoughts or

Hi! The cards are real easy to use. I did it at home after I saw our speech

therapist using them. The cards really helped because it helps you break the

words down. Kids with apraxia don't talk spontaneously so this is easier for

them. It really helped us. Charlotte

personally speaking, I would not do that. I would say that it is good for

you to work with her in ADDITION to the SLP, but honestly, I would hire a

private SLP and have them work with her and teach you certain ways to help your

daughter.

In my experience, kids will rarely perform their tasks for parents as they

would a good SLP.

just my thoughts

The good thing about the Kaufman cards, is that they can be used as a

" practice " machine for the kids.

The visual (pictures) will prompt a quicker response from them and help them

recall the word, so they would then repeat and practice it when they see the

card.

After much practice and diligence-- the idea would eventually CAUSE the

child to have the word spontaneously-- but it does take quite some time. I

have

no doubts that it happens-- it's just going to be the question of WHEN. And

of course each child is different and the timing will be different for all of

them.
