Guest guest
Stephanee, I had to 'teach' Mark to cross march by having him stand in one place and perform the movements very slowly for a while until he could coordinate them. After doing this for a bit, he could march forward but still had trouble lifting his knees high enough for a time. I did have to cue and remind him, " high knees please " to get him to pull those knees up high during the exercise. If ever he is having an 'off' day now, I have him cross march down the hall, and 'SNAP', all of those neuroconnections pull right back to where they are supposed to be. It really is a 'magic' exercise for our kids brains.... don't exactly know why. Don't worry too much about the house..... those babies will get better in no time and you will have an army of 'little' people who can do chores as program to give you a hand! This winter, I am going to have Mark do all of the snow shoveling.... a 'core strength' exercise! Guest guest
Well, I have to say I am still very overwhelmed. I am not really getting themonthly fee , though. What am I paying for each month? Am I supposed to have contact with someone monthly? I had one follow up and she asked me how it was going, but that was about it. Her program is so overwhelming that I think i just need to prioritize and go from there. There is just no way we could possibly do all of this, even if is were summertime. She would not tolerate it. The good news is that the school is willing to incorporate some of this, so we are getting support from the slp at school and I am hoping from the ot as well and the pt. Right now it is just the slp. If she can run through the speech exercise 1x a day and we can do it 2x a day, then I feel that we have hit the most important area for now. We do some stuff while she waits for the bus, some at night before bed. I have just borken it up into 15 minute increments and have schedules all over the house. However, if I did the entire program I would have 16 15 minute increments, not to mention the tv watching and computer time she needs. ... I just figure that everything I do is helping and whether it is 30 minutes one day or 3 hours, it is better than zero. That is the only thing that makes me not just quit becasue they so emphasize the duration, frequency and intensity. It is a great program, though .. Our advocate looked at it and was just riding me for not doing more, but we all have our limits. Guest guest
Sharon, This is where you need to call or email in to revise and hone things. If you are finding that you are not getting much of any one thing done and feel scattered than you need to pare down to what is more accomplishable and focus on some of the other areas next time perhaps. For instance, you need to query, what can I cut out to get more of program completed to my daughters best advantage? I rarely got all of the frequencies for APD and always reduced it by one or two yet still had good results BUT we definately needed this. Some things I missed almost completely for a while.... like story telling because it just never seemed to get done! However, I still tried to have good quality conversations and ensure that Mark could repeat what I was saying.... it was almost a hybrid of the original exercise that I could do. Note that while you are now paying a monthly fee; you will not be charged for your next eval.... it is included. Don't be afraid to email and ask for help in cutting some things down for a while. They load up your program with all of the items that they feel your daughter needs to work to maximize her results but this is YOUR program and you need to feel good about it. That is the key. It is your house and your daughter and you know what works and what does not work. The staff at NACD are there to help you make changes so it will work for your home.... You have a big say as to how it is tailored and individualized for your particular circumstances. How is your little girl doing? I know that she has a lot of other things going on besides apraxia and really works hard doing a lot of different therapies. Great kid! She is such a trooper.... Guest guest
Stephanee, Beyond the first couple of months, I am ashamed to say that I never filled out or sent in my forms! (No one asks about it but I do feel a little badly.) I am a single mom and doing it ALL by myself so the 'form filling' was one of the areas that I cut corners in. Because I had done so much reading prior to heading off to NACD, I didn't have a lot of questions and didn't need a lot of guidance. I already had a good idea of everything involved and everything that I needed to do. Books by Sally Godard, Glen Doman and all of the various 'Sensory' books out there have been a part of my reading at one time or another.... I knew and understood what I needed to do. In addition, Mark was cooperating. My biggest issue was figuring out an approximate schedule and having the materials at hand whenever I needed them. I took a spreadsheet and listed out all of the activities including all of the durations. I then divided it/cut paste it into morning, after school, after supper and before bed. I had to be careful to include time for outside activities (which usu. counted as aerobic time) and play with pals and school study time. If Mark had a lot of homework that night, I generally removed the academic portion of the program and just used the same NACD methodologies to help him with his work if he needed it. I never missed a day of crawl-skip; nor the Listening, nor the deep pressure, nor digit spans (usu. we missed one frequency and did them 3 times per day rather than 4 times per day) for the first 3 months. I was absolutely driven. I am thankful for this as these items paved the way to Marks healing. For materials, I keep most of our program items together in a storage box that is easy to move from room to room and just pull them out when necessary. I permanently keep a whiteboard in the car for digit spans and I also keep my 'moving across sylables' wordsheets in the car as well. We are now a well-oiled machine when it comes to program. Initially, I had to query some of the program items that were not on the DVD and that was about it. When I was having 'sleep' issues with Mark last fall, I emailed for 'help' as to what to do and Alison gave me some suggestions that proved effective. I also emailed her about a couple of weeks ago with regard to some school organizational strategies for him. I generally tend to be fairly self-reliant. In addition, I have posed a few questions on the message board when I felt confused by things that Mark was doing and got guidance there. I met Sara when I was in Utah this summer. She delivered a seminar with us to teach us the 'tricks of the trade' and getting through the various aspects of program with your child. Very high energy gal! She is an old pro with all of this. What is fun is to hear about some of the kids that are teenagers who are now accellerated. They have a lot of kids with digit spans in the 'high teens' if you can believe it and who have their own businesses and are really becoming stars. A lot of these kids started out with LD's like ours. It is very inspirational. I find that the more you do program, the better you understand what it is that you are doing and really have no need to ask unless you run into trouble. Yet this is in part because Mark is older and relatively mature in his understanding of what dyspraxia is. He has read some of the literature along with me and understands that to get better, he must work it. He knows this because for years and years, he did not get better. As he has worked with program, he has. Simple cause and effect have sold it for him. He is almost as driven as I am to eradicate this thing from his life. He knows that it is almost gone. Marks happiness level has absolutely gone sky high and it is wonderful to see him. He actually put together organized a volleyball team on Friday for a small in-school tournament. This would have been unheard of for him in the past. It used to be that a good day was one where he did not get bullied. Now, he is at a brand new school in mainstream and is already organizing kids and taking on a leadership role in school! Can you believe it? My kid is becoming popular? AMAZING!!! Little girls are writing him 'love notes' and he is absolutely loving it. What a differene a year of program can make, with all of its sweat and difficulties and hardships and sacrfices. He has some 'tweaking' to do but he is definately out of the dyspraxic woods and almost completely NT. As he has gotten better, the smaller our program has become and the easier it is to complete in full. When Mark started getting better, I wanted to scream about NACD and the benefits of home therapy from the rooftops. For global dyspraxia, daily therapy is the way to go. I am so glad somebody heard and that one more child can be helped before dyspraxia 'steals' away all confidence, self-esteem and pride. Dyspraxia is a thief of dreams. You don't really realize how terrible it is until your child hits grade one and grade two and their lives become a daily misery of failure. That is when the 'wake-up' call gets initiated. If we can remediate at home and help our children do what Mark did BEFORE grade 1, then perhaps somebody elses child can be saved the aweful experience that Mark endured. At least then, our suffering would have had a positive result to someone else. Hopefully, it will be you! Janice [sPAM] [ ] Re: Tracey and Sharon- how are your NACD programs going Janice - thank you again for the wonderful advise. Here lately I find myself telling people about " this nice woman named Janice, who I haven't met " ... I tell myself that if it weren't for you and your posts, I wouldn't have heard about NACD and wouldn't be in the middle of this new recovery adventure. How often did you talk with the NACD folks when you started with Mark? Did you communicate weekly or just send in your forms? My support person is Sara and I've talked to her a few times already. Did you call or e-mail your support person on a regular basis? Stephanee > > > > Hey Ladies, > > > > > > So, give us an update on your NACD programs! Going well? Finding > the > > time to do it? Guest guest
Sharon, I am correct. I just went to the fee schedule and 'reread' it. The $300 revisit fee is for 'additional' family members who are also doing program. Qute often families have their other NT kids on program and will have a new program designed once every 6 months or once a year to accellerate the child academically. This revisit fee is for other family members. I was thinking of getting one for myself one day! Janice [sPAM] [ ] Re: Tracey and Sharon- how are your NACD programs going We had our eval on Sept. 28th and got our programs about a week later. So, I've got almost 2 weeks under my belt now. Is it easy? Yes Is it time consuming? Yes Do I feel like I'm hurting my children? No Some of the programs go really well - auditory especially. They like listening to stories/general facts recorded by me. They don't like the counting tapes. They don't mind digit spans or what I call " word spans " . We're having our challenges with the visual processing - flash card memory as I call it. They don't like it - because their visual short term memory is so...short!! My little one can't manage the cross-march, but we'll get there. My daughter loves it. I have to admit, watching my little one hop on one leg today was absolutely laugh out loud hilarious!! I'm positive about the program, but have to admit that every morning after I've had my coffee, I feel like I'm being shot out of a cannon! I'm constantly checking our list and checking things off and running after a child to do program. I made a deal with myself that I would give this one year. No cheating, working it. I wrote up a journal on each child the day after our eval so I could chart progress. I intend to update it every 3 months after our evals. Of course, any " WOW! " moments will be written that day. We'll see. Time will tell. Overall, I'm positive. I do need outside help, tho. My house is a disaster, laundry is piling up and you can write your name in the dust on the coffee table. Cheers!
