Guest guest
Thanks for responding. How long have you been doing this approach with your son? Have you seen any decrease in the stims? Everything else in the book made sense to me but this concept kind of threw me. What do you do in your program? Thanks, -------------- Original message -------------- From: " Finnes " <suefinnes1@...> Hi, I am running a home sonrise programme for my son so my response will obviously be biased, but i do believe that different things work for different children/families and this approach works for us. I join in with all my sons stims, believing that this shows acceptance and trust in him. I know that he gets something from them and believe they help him in some way. I join in to try to understand what he is getting from them (sometimes sensory, sometimes relaxing - and if i comment on it often get a look from him as if to say 'you got it!- you understand')I have seen many examples to reinforce the belief that they help him - for example, he often hand flaps very intensely when he is making a huge effort with speech(he is mostly non verbal)- often his verbalisations are best after this, over the past few months he has been doing loads of tapping- fingers together, laminated pictures etc - we felt he was trying to reawaken the sensory processing channels to his fingertips and all of a sudden he is showing more individual finger awareness - now able to move fingers independantly and count on them ..When i went through my training we were put in pairs and we each had to do our childs main stim - and do what we thought was best to deal with it- I was flapping and jumping and my partner tried to stop me telling me to calm down and holding my arms down - I remember that even though i was role playing this made me want to do it more. I hope this helps - no black and white answers though for our children Sue
