Guest guest
My son would always drop the ending in words. " cat " is ca, milk is 'mi', etc. I have been trying to emphasize the endings of words, and now he is putting the ending sound and a vowel. So milk is now 'milka. He is doing this for all words. Does anyone know of a way to correct this and teach about ending sounds correctly? Thank you. Michele
Guest guest
My dd did this as well, at about age 5. She also would put a mmm in the front of everything, it was like her starting point to get a word out. The only thing that fixed it was practice and repetition. Just keep echoing the correct way back to him. If he points to the milk and says " milka " say " sure I will pour you some MILK " , try to over pronunciation and if you can get him to look at your mouth as you make the word. Don't over due too much as to point out his error, just enough to show him you understand what he wants and you are showing him the correct way to say it. I can bet in his mind he totally thinks he is saying it right, it is just coming out different. Barbara [ ] from dropping ending to this ... help! My son would always drop the ending in words. Guest guest
Leaving off the ends of words is usually an auditory tonal processing issue though it could be some oral motor stuff as well. Mark used to do this non-stop so I 'get' your frustration. We used TLP (The Listening Program) to work auditory tonal processing. That was another benefit for us with regards to TLP. Sorry.... forgot this one when I spoke about benefits of TLP in my earlier posts. If you look at the book " The Mislabled Child " by the Eides, you will discover that leaving off consonents to the end of words is often a APD issue. The child is actually not hearing the consonent but is completely missing it. For the 't' sound specifically, perhaps do a little oral motor work as well. Put a little peanut butter or some other yummy substance to the roof of your beloveds mouth and encourage him to raise his tongue to the roof to lick it off (while opening his jaw wide). Do this exercise everyday to work his tongue movement. Also holding a cherio or other small melty type candy with the tongue to the side of the mouth (in the cheek) helps with tongue lateralization (side to side). Hope this gives you a bit of help or direction to start your research. Janice Mother of Mark, 13 [sPAM][ ] from dropping ending to this ... help! My son would always drop the ending in words.
