Guest guest
Someone on this list, I believe, recently asked about success stories in ASD with gluten free diet. I'm forwarding something that I wrote on a celiac site when a similar question was asked. This is about a little boy that I actually know personally. He's not some kid that I read about on the web. My son was in preschool with him. His Mom was very strict with his diet and because his behaviors were so severe she was able to pinpoint what foods he had problems with. She also had an unbelieveable amount of support. (His aunt went to preschool with him to monitor his diet.) You can see from the message below that he also had oppositional defiant disorder and is considered almost recovered today. Most people don't believe his Mom when she says he has autism. This is also a strictly celiac/allergy avoidance success story as this family never saw a DAN! physician or did any chelation. His Mom was literally so scared of this toddler (he did pin her to the floor and give her a black eye on at least one occasion) that she hid the knives before going to bed at night. Luckily a chiropractor gave her a copy of the Parents magazine with Karyn Seroussi's article about the GFCF diet for ASD. She started taking gluten out of his diet and almost immediately started seeing improvement. Three weeks into the diet they saw a pediatric Gastro who " reluctantly " agreed to test him for celiac. Even 3 weeks into the diet, he still had high numbers. Fast forward 2 years and this child was the star pupil in his preschool class. He's now in a regular 2nd grade classroom and on the A-B honor roll. The only residual symptoms that I see of the ASD is some ritualistic behaviors. Everything else is gone!
