anti-inflamatory drugs and Chronic Pancreatitis

Hello all,

I have a question. I have just been diagnosed with carpol tunnel

syndrome. It can be quite painful. Naturally nothing is as painful

as a pancreatic attack, but this can have me in tears if I gently bump

my thumb wrong. Thats where all the pain started and now it's going

to my shoulder. Both right and left arms, wrists and shoulders. But

the right is the most painful.

Anyway, my GP is all the doctor I have right now and she doesn't know

enough about pancreatitis to be telling me what drugs to take and not

to take. Therefore, she doesn't perscribe me anything except what my

last specialist did. She would like to RX me an anti-inflamatory to

help with swelling and pain. I know Vioxx can cause pancreatitis in

rare cases. And celebrex isn't covered under my RX plan. Does anyone

else out there with CP take an anti-inflamatory on a regular basis?

Has it effected you or your pancreatic pain in any way? What are the

side effects in regards to taking an anti-inflamatory and having CP?

Also does anyone take these and have SOD?

Any help is appriciated. Thanks in advance.

Sandy

Thanks all for answering. I have checked most NSAIDS on rxlist.com and

most of them have a rare side effect of them causing either pancreatitis

or a pancreatic attack. I am aware that this is a RARE effect with

generally less than a 1-3% chance, but I don't see how me taking a pill

that can cause what I already have, will not effect that area of my

body. I even checked generic motirn (IB) and sure enough, that side

effect is there.

I have not tried PT yet. I have to be referred out to a doctor for that

referral. I am HMO. I do want relief from this newest pain but not at

the cost of my pancreas getting worse. I was told that each time I have

an attack, the pancreas gets just that much worse. I haven't had a bad

attack in 1 1/2 years and would like that to continue. :-) As I have

had to learn to live with my pancreas pain on a daily basis, I guess I

will have to learn to live with this too.

Thanks,

Sandy

>Any Antiinflammatory ( drug class NSAIDS ) that you may take is very hard on

the stomach. So if you decide to take one, be sure you eat and then take the

medicine immediately. Anti inflammatories can cuase GI upsets, diarrhea, weight

gain, fliuid retention and old fashion stomach aches. if you do not take them

correctly, they can actually cause GI bleeds. (Or passing of blood in the stool

).

>Often there are some anti inflammatories that are not as hard on your GI system

as others and I believe that Relafen, Celebrex and Vioxx are suppose to fall

into that class. However I have had several of my clients tell me that their GI

systems were affected regardless of which one they took. As far as affecting the

pancreas, you would need to check with the drug company or email them and

several of those companies are available on line and have web sites. I know that

for myself when my tendonitis starts up that I take a childs motrin for 24 hours

then stop. Just enough to give me tolerable relief. I have SOD and it has not

flared up my SOD but if I take the anti inflammatories too long, my GERD and

stomach flare up big time. I would read up on anything first or try the drug web

site just to be sure as I know there are certian antiinflammatories that are not

pancreas user friendly.

>As far as your carpal tunnel,,, have you tried the wrist splints or any

stretching exercizes ? One of my co workers just got done having both of her

wrists operated on for CTS. I know that it hurt her before surgery and she

certianly feels better after surgery!!! Sometime Physical therapy helps

depending on the severity. You just may have to put up with the pain vs chancing

a pancreatitis attack. Wish I could offer you more help.
