Guest guest
GI physicians who are specialist in the field do ERCP's. In that procedure measurements can be done to check to see how tight the sphincter of oddi is, this is called manometry. The endoscopist then can do what is called a sphincterotomy; which is a small incision in the sphincter that releases some of the tightness. Often after a sphincterotomy a stent will be placed to keep the sphincter open until the small incision has a chance to heal. Some of these stents will pass on their own, in a BM, and some can be removed with another scope. A sphincteroplasty is a surgical procedure that should only be done by a surgeon who specialized in pancreatic surgery. I had my procedure at MUSC; I am not sure as to what other institutions perform this but s Hopkins; Duke; USC (calfornia) come to mind. I hope this helps and your friend gets the care she needs.
