I don't know anything about liver problems but I do know that this is one

sign of malabsorption. Emma has at times had almost whitish yellow poops

when she is having malabsorption problems. They are usually loose and

smelly as well but sometimes I don't see all of the signs all at once.

I hope this helps.

Symptoms of Liver Disease

The symptoms of liver disease include:

jaundice (yellowing of eyes and skin)

severe itching

dark urine

mental confusion or coma

vomiting of blood

easy bruising and tendency to bleed

gray or clay-colored stools

abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen

Also see the Merk Manual online for more detailed information about

liver disease:

http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual/section4/chapter38/38g.htm

My son has bloodwork done annually which includes a test for elevated

liver enzymes (among lots of other things.) If your child has had

bloodwork done at the cf clinic, this was probably part of it. Ask

about the results. The doctor can also tell a lot from the routine

cf examination (when they press around on the child's belly, part of

that is checking the liver.)

Don't be afraid to ask questions to your cf team (even call in and

ask, it's what they are there for!) If you don't grasp what they are

saying the first time, ask that they explain it more clearly or in

more detail.

I believe that it's a low percentage of people with cf who develop

liver disease (not that the " odds " mean anything!)

Hope this is helpful.

Cheryl,

I discussed the color of stool with Elyse's gastroenterologist (sp). White

stool can indicate liver problems. Elyse has always had light yellow stool,

and I was told that she was fine.

Liver function?

Does anyone know if your child can physically show signs of liver

problems? I am a little worried because, I am pretty sure that when my

was born the doctor was explaining to me about the consistency and

visual apprearance of his bowel movements and he said that if his poops

started going light in colour that could indicate at problem with his liver.

Has anyone heard this? Am I just imagining that conversation, since, at

that time, and a little still at times, I was out of my mind with

craziness!!?? Sometimes now, Matty's poops are lighter than I have ever

seen poops to be. Should I be concerned, I forgot to mention this at our

last visit.

Any comments are much appreciated

My Matt (great name by the way) is 10 months old and has elevated

liver enzymes. His liver is also a little enlarged. As for poop color

I think he's been pretty consistent. Now that he's moving more toward

big kid food and less formula they've become pretty normal color and

solid. You should definitely get it checked out though. Better safe

than sorry!!

Take care -

That's how his poops look but not every time. Today , for instance , he has had

about 4 poops this morning. Only one of them looked like that. The rest had

more colour. But never the colour that my other boys' poops look like. Can I

connect the poops with the meal prior, maybe there is something in the meal that

he can't absorb?

What a lovely conversation eh?
