Guest guest
Hi, My five almost six year old daughter had her CF checkup last week and they told me that they are pretty sure she has asthma also. I was just wondering if any of you parents out there who's child has both could give me some info about it. She had a dry hacking nonstop cough for a couple of days before her clinic appointment. While we were there she had her PFT's and they were down a bit so they did an albuterol treatment and they raised substantially which is what makes her doctor feel it is asthma. She is on steroids right now and I upped her breathing treatments. Her breathing is much better now. She is still coughing but not as much but now it is pretty loose. Is this the way it works? I will be calling her doctor this afternoon with an update on her. Just wanted to get a little info beforehand. Also for those who's kids have asthma how often do there asthma act up? We have kept is CF pretty much undercontrol and now this. I am a nervous wreck over this. How can you tell if it is a cold, CF or asthma? I am sure I will learn in time but any info is much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dottie Mom of is 5 six in March with CF
Guest guest
Dot, One of the tricks here is to determine whether she has allergic asthma or non-allergic asthma (reactive airway disease). Most pwcf have reactive airway disease - our little guy does, and he has no problem with our cat etc. but if it gets smoky or " perfumy " he immediately complains of chest discomfort/tightness. So we try to keep him away from these types of irritants whenever possible. I think it would be easier if he was allergic and we had to give the cat away - its hard to get your neighbors not to burn wood in their fireplaces or to not wear perfume. Colds etc. tend to set off his asthma as well. When he's having a problem he gets a bit wheezy and his pfts drop without any sign of an infection. Of course, if you don't take care of it an infection may follow due to increased lung inflammation. I have RAD as well (no cf) and it can sneak up on you - my pfts have dropped without my even realizing and if I miss the warning signs I eventually develop bronchitis or pneumonia. We give him steriods, ventolin and cpt or vest treatments until he clears up. I don't know if this helps but.. Good luck Roe > Hi, > My five almost six year old daughter had her CF checkup last week and they told me that they are pretty sure she has asthma also.
