The drug treats lung infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the most common cause of chronic respiratory tract infection in patients with CF. Promixin is to be used with the new Prodose AAD system which uses adaptive aerosol technology (AAD) to deliver drugs to the lungs more efficiently. The device is said to constantly analyse the patient's breathing pattern in order to deliver a pulse of aerosolised drug into the first half of inhalation, optimising drug deposition in the lungs. Patients prescribed Promixin can have a free Prodose AAD system on an extended loan basis. The pack contains Prodose Disc, an electronic disc with microchip which is inserted into the handpiece before treatment to control the dose. The NHS price of Promixin is pounds 69 for 30 one million IU vials.
