My son Chas is 18 mos old and weighs 22lbs 12oz and stands at 30 1/4 " . How big

does he need to be for the vest? How does the vest work....I know it may sound

like a silly question...? When do I start looking into the vest? or do I? He

currently gets 3-4 aersols(3/4 albuterols, 2 pulmicorts-asthma realted, and 1

pulmizyne) with the same amount of CPTs. Will the vest work for him? Do I ask

the doctors? I am in COlumbus, Ohio and attend Children' Hospital here in

Columbus (if anyone else is familiar with COlumbus, let me know!!!).

My son , is 21 months and has had the vest since 19 months old , his chest

had to be at least 20 inches, he is 33 1/4 inches, and 29 lbs. I asked the

respatory therapist at our cf clinic when we could start persuing it. dr wrote a

rx and a month later we received it we are still in the trial period, was

up to 20 mins 2 x day but got a ear infection and now we are having trouble

getting him to sit still, and he cries the whole time as if it is hurting him.

we are going back to his ped tomorrow to see if he still has a ear infection. up

until now we have loved the vest. just plugged in a video and he would watch it

, even fall asleep. I would start asking now about getting the vest. if dr feels

its right for chas. good luck , I hope that helped

Hi le,

Just to confirm what Amy, Bev and have already told you...we are able

to customize a Vest if you child is small. Normally we like to see a 23

inch chest circumference, but we and make some alterations to help with the

fit. What is Chas's chest measurement?

The Vest works by compressing the chest wall very rapidly and creating

expiratory airflow; in other words, it creates the airflow out of your lungs

that you would have when you cough. The Vest " vibrates " or oscillates 10 -

15 times per second. This produces rapid cough-like air movement from

within the lungs. The end result is that the thick sticky mucus that is

deep inside the small airways of the lungs is moved up to the larger airways

and eventually brought out. When done consistently, it helps prevent the

accumulation of mucus in the airways and decreases the amount of damage to

the airways that occurs from inflammation.

You can see more at our website (to include a very interesting video) at

www.thevest.com.

I will forward your e-mail to Geoff Peistrup, your local person. He will

contact you by e-mail to see if there is anything he can do to help you. He

takes care of the patients that come from the Columbus Children's Hospital

Cystic Fibrosis Center.

I hope this helps and let me know if there is anything else I can do.

I just wanted to tell you that we received our vest last Friday. is 4,

and the lady that came out said he handled the 1st time very well for his

age. He has been doing it twice a day, every day now and is doing great. I

think he has mixed emotions about it, but I sure love it. I think it takes

a little getting used to for him. It is so aggressive, I think it scares

him a little. I am so thankful to have it. Both boys, wcf, have been

fighting RSV for over a month now, and 10 clappings a day was getting to me.

Yay for the vest!! They are both doing great now, and down to two

treatments a day each. Thanks for all the info.

Wonderful, Melinda. I think many kids are a little anxious about the Vest

at the beginning. I watched a mom of a 2 year old little girl introduce the

Vest to her child. She really went slowly and let the child's natural

curiosity motivate her. I brought the Vest and machine to her home. We

just put the device and the Vest in the middle of the living room and left

it there. Eventually her daughter came up to the machine and started

looking at it and touching it. She was very cautious. Her big brother put

it on and now she was really interested! She still didn't want to try it

on, but she was watching intently. By the end of the training session, she

was putting the Vest on but not turning it on yet. I did a follow-up with

the mom a week later. She said her daughter now was using the Vest full

time and even set the time and rate herself (with supervision, of course).

The Vest therapy time was always associated with positive reinforcement

activities, i.e. special video, book reading, games, one-on-one time with a

caregiver, etc. I think many of the parents here on CF Parents could tell

you of their successes in getting their children to use the Vest.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. As always, I am here to help. Let me

know what I can do.

Randy,

Would you have the local representative contact me. I have two 7 years old

sons who have cf. We asked the drs about vests when they were younger and they

told us they were too small. Adam and Alec have been very healthy, but in Dec,

Adam cultured PA I have been using my hands and I need some relieve. We attend

Dallas Children's Medical Center cf. Instead of being too small one of my sons

may be too big for his height vs the vest.. My sons are on the other end of too

much weight for their age. I would like some information but I approach the

drs.My email is bkwesley@....

W. mom to Adam and Alec both 7 w/cf and two teenagers ncf
