Margo,

I understand the dilemma about spacing meds. I remember times when

my son was younger, thinking " No one told me I had to become a

mathematical wizard to me a mom! " But boy, I should got good at

creating charts.

Anyway, even though some TOBI gets out of the lungs via the blood

stream and can deplete total body magnesium, I would not worry about

taking a multivitamin/mineral or magnesium supplements along with the

TOBI.

TOBI is meant to work IN the lungs so it's doing it's job there. And

if you take oral magnesium around the same time as inhaling TOBI, then

the magnesium is going into the blood to do it's job there. Sure, the

oral magnesium in the blood will circulate through the lungs but we

have magnesium in our body anyway so I don't think this is much a

concern.

It's just that over time, I firmly believe that since TOBI escapes the

lungs via the blood and can deplete total body magnesium, then a

deficiency is created.

And if you don't put back the missing magnesium then you're going to

suffer the consequences: and in CF the consequences can be aches,

pains, cramps, osteoporosis, impaired glucose regulation, increased

lung lung pH imbalance which leads to increased funky bacteria and

fungus infections, decreased PFTs, decreased stamina, headaches,

insomnia, irritability, depression -- you get the idea.

However, if we were talking about taking IV tobramycin or IV

gentamycin or any oral antibiotic, then I would definitely space the

doses of minerals so they don't compete for the same receptor site.

I know it's tricky spacing doses but the end result is so worth it.

Just two months after my son began taking magnesium along with

inhaling tea tree essential oil (not in his nebulizer!), he no longer

cultured aspergillus or Stenotrophomonas -- and the mucoid form of PA

that he'd cultured since 1998 was finally sensitive to ALL

antibiotics. And 10 months later, he no longer cultured the mucoid PA.

And he accomplished all this without resorting to IV antibiotics.

Several months ago, quite a few people on the Cystic-L wrote asking

for the information that helped . After I sent it to them, many

wrote back saying they finally felt better than they have in a long

time, and I'm so grateful they're feeling better. If you want copies

of what I sent them, please let me know. You might find something

useful there.

Margo,

I understand the dilemma about spacing meds. I remember so many times

when my son was younger, I thought " No one told me I had to become a

mathematical wizard to me a mom! " But boy, I sure got good at

creating charts!

Anyway, about the TOBI and minerals -- even though some TOBI gets out

oral magnesium in the blood circulates through the lungs but we

have magnesium in our body anyway so I don't think this additional

amount is much a concern.

It's just that continuously using TOBI -- along with other meds

commonly used in pwcf (along with malabsorption issues) -- then I

firmly believe that since TOBI escapes the lungs via the blood and can

deplete total body magnesium, a deficiency is created.

And if you don't put back the missing magnesium then you're going to

suffer the consequences: and in CF the consequences can be aches,

pains, cramps, osteoporosis, arthritis, impaired glucose regulation,

increased lung pH imbalance which leads to increased funky bacteria

and fungal infections, decreased PFTs, decreased stamina, decreased

appetite, increased fat malabsorption, headaches, insomnia,

irritability, depression -- you get the idea.

However, if we were talking about taking IV tobramycin or IV

gentamycin or any oral antibiotic, then I would definitely space the

doses of minerals so they don't compete for the same receptor site.

I know it's tricky spacing doses but the end result is so worth it.

---Kim thanks for your quick response, this has got me very excitted

and I want to learn more. Would love for you to send me more info on

what helped . By the way Amber takes the inhaled Tobi, and

right now she is taking Prednisone and Sporanox. Do you think those

could have any side affects with magnesium?

Thank you so much.

Kim - can I please have a copy of it too. My son Eddie is definately

lacking something. I just joined this group today, and I have never

heard of the magnesium deficiency before. Thank you.

Margo,

I don't know about Sporanox, but Prednisone -- any corticosteroid --

will further deplete magnesium levels. So between TOBI and Prednisone

lowering magnesium, it's little wonder your horse-rider has joint

aches. Perhaps increasing magnesium will help her. It's worth a try.

When cultured aspergillus, I didn't want to think about him

going on any anti-fungal med such as Sporanox, and he's only had one

round of prednisone before -- with horrible results -- so I knew we

didn't want to revisit that route.

I'll send you the info. It's in four separate Microsoft Word

documents. If you have trouble downloading, let me know and I'll send

them one at a time.

--- Yes Kim this Prednisone episode has been a tough one, she is now

tapering off, TG. She cultured Aspergillus 3 months ago and it has

taken that long to see the count go down. She is taking 500 mg of

Calcium + Vit D morning and night.

Thank you for all the info on this.

Calcium + Vit D morning and night.

Thank you for all the info on this.
