I think all Middle and High Schools are clueless. Its up to Us the parents

to educate them and keep on top of them.. I know the kids are BIG and we look

like neurotic parents but damn they don't know what its like....

Make copies of CF info...talk to nurse...talk to teachers...get 504 and give

copies to gym, music, etc. Review schedule year BEFORE so that they don't

end up in Woodshop and have to be pulled like my daughter....

I am a high school teacher and YES they are clueless. Teachers are

not told important medical info like a student has CF. If they do

have a 504 plan THEN the teachers actually get the information they

need! I plan on having one for our daughter starting in

Kindergarten!!!

--My daughter is 14 and going into High School next yr, what is a

504 plan? I have never heard of that before, I just told all the

teachers at the beginning of school this last yr. Of course the

nurse knew because she handed out her pills at lunch.

Margo,

A 504 plan consists of you sitting down with your daughters teachers

and telling them about what (if any) accomodations she will need.

Going to the hall or bathroom to cough...extra bathroom priveledges

(some teachers are very strick about not letting kids out to use the

bathroom during class) Extra makeup time if she gets

sick...Whatever you think may help. It also is helpful for them all

to hear about what she has. The difference between this and just

telling the teachers is that the teachers legally have to follow a

504 plan. You will probably run into a few teachers in your

daughters high school career that are not very helpful...This plan

makes it so they HAVE TO follow whatever guidlines are in the plan.

It definately does not classify your child as " special ed " . I know a

few students with CF that were placed in Special Ed because of

absences (from being sick) when they probably should just have had a

good 504 plan!

I hope that helps! I hope she has a great experience in High School

next year!

The only time Amber has missed a lot of school was last yr when she

ended up in the hospital for a week and then another at home. I just

got her homework for her and she did it and I took it back. She kept

all her grades at an A, always been a straight A student(brag)LOL.

The only teacher I had a problem with was her P.E. teacher, and he

said he was going to flunk her because she wasn't there to

participate. I ended going in and having a nice looong talk with

him, and when she was able to go back he found extra things for her

to do to make her grade up.

Margo,

Just call her school counselor and tell her/him that you want to

schedule a 504 meeting and ask them what you need to bring. Probably

a diganosis from the doctor and I am not sure what else. If I were

you I would try to get it in place by the end of this school year so

that it is set for next year...You will have a 504 meeting every year

after that just to reinforce the 504 plan and make any necessary

changes.

A 504 would have solved that problem in the bu!! Because it says she works

on a modified curriculum. Meaning when other kids are required to do so

much work say 100% they only need 80% to get the core concepts of the class.

(That's just an estimate). On a modified curriculum, samantha is only

required to meet the core requirements of the class if that is all she can

do. It really helps. I am so glad that your daughter seems to be doing so

well health wise. If sammy goes ft she tends to get sicker more often, so

this works for us. I hope this helps too! You will need a note from the

doctor recommending her for a 504 and the reason why. They are use to the

request and that's usually not a problem. Just be sure to keep copies of

everything and confirm that EVERYTHING is done. We got in a big jam when we

ASSUMMED that everyone was doing their part. The finger was pointed to

everyone else, so we took the on the responsibility of making sure that

everyone followed through on what they were suppose to do.
