Even when we found out what a 504 was, we were still not using it to its

complete benefit until this year. It took a lot of meetings and some that

were not so nice on our part. It's a plan for children with special needs

basically. It outlines what she has, what symptoms are like and what to do

if she is ill. Since her illnesses are irregular and spuratic (sp?) (she

could go a whole quarter with nothing, but then miss almost an entire

marking period) the 504 outlines what the teachers are required to do to

help her succeed in school. Basically, the law says that schools must

accommodate children with special needs (medical, social, ect.) in order to

make the succeed in school. My daughter's plan includes a tutor for when

she misses 3 days and a plan that teachers put aside work in a folder each

day she is not there. She was having a really rough time this year and we

decided to put her on a MOnday, Wednesday, Friday schedule, allowing for her

to rest-up on tuesdays and thursdays. It worked well and she is feeling

much better now.

But i have had some horrible experiences. I had a spanish teacher tell us

flat out - she cannot pass this class if she is not in the classroom to

participate. I about jumped over the table at him. I couldn't believe it

after we had just discussed her illness, the 504 and what they HAVE to do.

He was outright refusing. He still refuses to send home work, but we show

up in his classroom each day and ask for work. He often times will hand us

duplicate work or nothing with some excuse. We hired a tutor and have her

working on the chapters without him and it has made a world of difference.

She has always been an A student and we told him anything less than a B was

unacceptable and showed he was not doing his part tohelp her succeed. You

will come across a lot of ignorance I have found.

Does your daughter have a lot of missed school time, is this affecting her

grades? If so, a 504 might work for you. I can't see not having one, just

in case.
