STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured

everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just

tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and

got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid

went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called

later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at

6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they

known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us

today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition

instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he

can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was

getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient

medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the " 3 " steps, STR . Read and L earn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the

lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain

damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple

questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK . to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE

(Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

{NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out

their tongue... if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the

other that is also an indication of a stroke}

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately

and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people;

you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Deb,Thanks for sharing this..  as much as we think we will know what is happening when something like this happens, your mind tends to go blank.  Seeing this and making sure you KNOW this can and will save a life.  I had an incident yesterday as well.. must be a full moon, but I woke up with a rip roaring chest pain...  felt like a knife thru my lung and I was very surprised to hear my husband ask me to smile and raise my hands above my head.  I know he's gotten this e-mail before but to realize that he's read it and knows the stuff...  wow.

If you haven't seen this before, please read it... if you have, please read it again.  You never know when you'll need it and you don't want to go blank.   I went blank yesterday.

Gals and the GuysI will be printing one of these messages and post it somewhere near me so that I can remember. But, if you are the one having a stroke - there is no time to think.All I know, is that one second I was going up to the bedroom for something and the next, I tumbled over in the hallway and was on the floor. Hit my head on something too; but, don't have any idea what. Also, I have two bruised areas on my back and yet, the seem to be on the wrong side because of the way I thought I fell.What has been scary and still is for me - is that I don't remember anything afterwards. My Mom says that I MSN'd her a message that I needed help; but, I don't know how I got to my computer. Also, any of us that have Fibro know that if we go all the way

down, it's very hard for us to get back up. I have a vague recollection of one of my brothers coming in; but, I was in bed by then and not about to get up for anything. Couldn't imagine going to the ER. I know - that was really wrong on my behalf and I certainly won't handle it like that again. However, I came through it.Luv Gloria
