Guest guest
Hello again, Marcy, You'll gather from what most people say on the board that low fat diets do tend to work best for CP sufferers. The Top5plus5 section on diet (Heidi gave you the link) advocates low fat. However, you should definitely avoid those foods which you find trigger an attack and then perhaps try out the lower fat diet. I think you need to discuss this with a good specialist. Mine recognise that low fat is helpful but they have tried, and, I think, succeeeded, in getting me a good balance between the amount of enzymes I take and as near-to- normal a diet as possible. I DO follow a low fat diet but not quite as low as some sufferers. This is what both my gastro and panc specialist wanted so as to keep good vitamin absorption. I know you have been told you don't need enzymes yet. I know other CP patients who have been told the same thing. Perhaps discussion with a specialist and some trial and error are important just now. Other more experienced patients will probably post a reply now as well. It is quite different with alcohol because, even where alcohol is not the cause of the pancreatitis, and even where it does not appear to trigger an attack at the time, it definitely does damage the pancreas. Doctors, even specialists, may differ just a little over diet (where needs and responses can vary a little from patient to patient) but ALL always say that alcohol MUST be avoided if you have pancreatitis. I have had attacks of pancreatic pain from childhood and my CP is hereditary not alcohol-linked. I never found that alcohol had any effect on me. However, both my gastro and my panc specialist are absolutely adamant that I MUST NOT drink any alcohol at all. Even small amounts can cause damage so I follow this rule religiously. I hope I've summed up the sort of advice I've been given in my first year of diagnosis, and what works for me, but other more experienced patients will come back with more replies, I hope! Good luck and best wishes again, Fliss
