Guest guest
Hi: I am a 36 year old male. For the last two years, I have had been frequently woken in the middle of the night with a severe ache in the middle of my back. As soon as I get up, the ache goes away. The ache does not appear during the day. The ache is localized to my mid-back; I do not suffer any abdominal pain. The backache is deep and it does not go away when I take over the counter pain relievers. However, as soon as I stand up and start moving, it disappears. When I lay down to sleep, the ache is not present. It manifests itself only in the middle of the night (usually about 5 hours into my sleep). I have received blood/urine tests and a CT scan -- results came back normal. However, the pain persists. I am considering whether I should ask my doctor about an ERCP to test for chronic pancreatitis. I recognize that blood and CT tests will often miss chronic pancreatitis in its early/moderate stages. Question: Are my symptoms consistent with this disease? Has anyone had chronic pancreatitis with: a) pain only in the mid-back area, not any abdominal pain; or pain only at night that goes away with movement. I am in a higher risk group for chronic pancreatitis because of a history of heavy alcohol consumption during my teens and twentities. -- Key Words: mid back pain; wake or wakes up; sleeping; sleep.
