Hi Theresa,

welcome to the list! I would ask your doc to prescribe Xopenex

instead of albuterol. Works the same but without the side-effects of

albuterol. Becoming hyper is a known side-effect.

When a was younger Albuterol used to make her throw up, so she

was put on Xopenex and did really well. She is back on Albuterol but

she is 9 now.

Hi Theresa,

Maybe you and other parents out there can help answer this because

I've always been curious about this...

I wondering if your doctor prescribed albuterol breathing treatments

because your daughter absolutely needs them -- or whether the doctor

prescribed them as a standard CF protocol?

You said she's very healthy right now, so why is she doing twice daily

bronchodialator treatments? If she has an asthma component, perhaps

that's different and that's the reason for the breathing treatments.

My son was diagnosed with CF at age 4, but his CF doctor didn't

prescribe albuterol until a couple years later, and then it was only

in a puffer inhaler to use just prior to sports. However, he did take

a daily asthma medication, a syrup called Alupent. It worked well and

as I recall it didn't have any hyper side effects.

Just to add to Torsten's note, I know some people do well with

Xopenex, but some don't. My son tried it back in 2000 and it didn't

work for him, so he switched back to albuterol (he's always mixed his

with Intal).

So I'd ask your doctor if the albuterol treatment is something she

needs every day even on healthy days, or just days when she's having

exacerbations.

And as a reminder, albuterol will deplete the body of magnesium,

calcium, postassiou, and phosphorus. So be sure she gets a good

multivitamin/mineral supplement and magnesium-rich foods every day.

We have never used albuterol. I always thought that was used only if you are

having a hard time breathing. Once when I told them my youngest was having a

hard time catching her breath they suggested that we should have called them

and they would have put her on albuterol. But that was when we were first

diagnosed. We do Tobi treatments but so far nothing else. Deb A

My daughter currently has no breathing problems. Apparently the

respone that I have gotten from my daughters docs is that there is

two approaches in treating cf. They are going at it aggressively.

they belive that all this medicine will help in fighting off lung

infections. We have known basically from when she was born that

there was a possibility that she had cf. so she has had these

treaments along with intal and pulmozyne ever since. thanks for

your help

Oh, yeah!

My four year old gets pretty wound up with the albuterol. So do a few other

kids I know who have asthma and use the Albuterol. Sorry I don't have any real

suggestions though.

---Hi- thats weird cuz it does the opposit for -J, My daughter

used to go to sleep w/ a binky and he goes to sleep with his

treatments, I put that mask on and once that smoke starts he's out.

Now that he's getting older and sleeping less he somtimes tries to

fight them. But I was told by the dr. that it might cause hyperness,

so I think its normal if it does happen. Kari
