I was also very active prior to my pancreatitis getting bad. I was a fat kid. It runs in my family. So I always made a conscious effort to exercise and stay healthy. I ran a couple of miles about 5 times a week and did strength training 1 or 2 times a week. I kept my weight around 170, which for my height and frame equals about a size 9-10. Once I started getting sick enough to limit my activity the weight really started packing on. But even after it got bad enough to severely limit my caloric intake, I still stayed the same weight. I am stuck up around 230. I can eat fine and stay there, or I can be on IV fluid alone for ten days and only drop a pound. I really don't get it. They put me on TPN and I packed on about 15 pounds in about a month! I hear the same things, about be glad you have it to lose, or consider it a sign that things aren't that bad with your pancreas yet. But with the strain of the disease my energy is so low, that I think I would be able to do more if I could lose some weight. I kept a diary of my intake to my primary physician to see if he could suggest something to help me lose the weight. I think he thought I was lying about my intake. He said that if it was accurate, then my intake wasn't the problem. He said that my only way to lose weight would be to increase my activity and get my metabolism up. I said, " that is a good idea in theory, but when a lot of the time you can't even get off the couch, it is probably a little unrealistic for me at this point. " So now I am just waiting for my surgery and hoping that I can get myself going on the road to recovery. Maybe I will be back to a level where I can really implement an exercise routine again. I have to say that I certainly think that the body works in ways that physicians don't even begin to understand yet. Best wishes, Keri
Guest guest
Keri, you aren't alone with the weight problem. I can't lose any weight to save my soul. I know I don't eat enough to cause it, so it's got to be something else. I also have little energy to lose weight as well. Just wanted to let you know, you aren't alone.
