Guest guest
, Emma had very similiar issues as Liam who I recall was diagnosed with silent reflux. As I mentioned previously, Emma also had silent acid reflux which went undiagnosed for a few months but when I pushed they finally ran some tests and discovered it. She was put on Zantac and this did nothing. Slowly, she ate and drank less and less. Her doctors at the time were of little help and in large part blamed me for stressing her out during eating. I switched hospitals and she was immediately hospitalized for dehydration and was in for a week. If Liam is not peeing during the night, this is a sure sign of dehydration. During her hospitalization, they started her on night feeds using an NG tube. The absolute best thing that has been done for her so far without a doubt. She now has a G tube which we use solely for hydrating her as she is definately consuming enough calories at this point orally but she still hates to drink and drinks only about 10 ounces a day. It took a little while after we started her on the NG tube for her to eat but she now eats four meals of pureed table foods every day (pukes once a day or so). She is on Zantac and Prilosec. We tried Bethanocal and Reglan, both of which increased her vomiting. Emma's hospitlaization occurred right around one year of age. She is now 2 1/2 and in the 80th percentile. At the time of her hospitalization, she was not even on the charts. I hated the NG tube and so did Emma but quite frankly it relieved a lot of stress for us. It was really hard when my three year old (now four) would repeatedly ask me why I always cried when I feed Emma. I haven't cried once over feeding issues since Emma was placed on the NG tube. My suggestion would be to discuss with your doctor getting an NG tube and adjusting his reflux meds. An NG or G tube is not something to be afraid of. There is a strong correlation between weight and height at a young age in CF patients to lung functionality at later stages. It's important to do everything you can to get his weight up. Just my two cents. Good Luck. Our thoughts are with you. - mom to Emma 2 1/2 years old w/cf and acid reflux and Isabelle 4 1/2 years old wo/cf ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! Guest guest
I know that when Patti would not breast feed if she was too hot or had lost too many electrolytes. We would feed her grape flavored pediasure with a large syringe durring the day and usually by evening her eating would pick up again. Then we would make sure it was nice and cool in the house when it was time to feed. When we ended up having to switch her to the bottle it took several tries to find one she liked. If you are really interested in bottle feeding you may have to try different brands to find the one Liam likes. She is two and still on the bottle as it is the only way she will drink her pediasure. We still have to make sure she has had gatoraide or pedialyte through out the day and if it is 80 or above she won't eat at all. I am sorry you are having this trouble with Liam. I remember being so worried about Patti that I couldn't stand it. I hated switching to the bottle, but in the end it was the best thing for us. I hope Liam will begin feeding again. Dawn mom of 4, 7 and under, the youngest wcf weight gain breast feeding Hi all Its me again and Liam How the heck is my boy ever gonna grow, he is eating like 3 mins of breast milk per feed. Its just not good enough and I am so frustrated, he wont even take it out of a bottle or feeding cup. He also dosent seem to want solids either. What is a mother suppose to do, he has put on 100gms in one month, apparently itsment to be about 75 gms per week now. He is 5 1/2 months old. I am getting really stressed out and feel sick about this disease, today its getting me down heaps. I know there are way worse situations out there but this is our first hurdle so bear with me. Guest guest
, Have you been able to talk w/ the doctor and/or nutritionist for some ideas or help? Wyatt only fed 10 minutes or so on each breast. But he wanted to feed every hour so I did it. (He was also my first child and I didnt' work till he was 8mos old then I ran a daycare in my house) He did work w/ a therapist at 8mos old and she taught him to drink from a straw then a sippy cup while he was hospitalized for failure to thrive. He never drank from a bottle. Once he got the hang of things we started mixing some formula (nutramagen)so it gave him 30calories per ounce and added rice cereal to it to add even more calories and thicken it up because he had reflux really bad. I just put it in a sippy cup w/ a wide slot in the mouthpiece. Maybe your doctor could help you get ahold of a therapist to help him out to use a straw or sippy cup (I don't know since he's 5 1/2 mos)? Just as a little reassurance although he was hospitalized 2x's one at 8 months for a couple of weeks and one for a week at a year old for failure to thrive and an NG tube he has done incredible well w/ his weight (he used to be below the 5th percentile and now is in the 10th) since his first bday and he is 7 now doing great gaining and eats like a horse! Guest guest
, was similar in his eating habits and growth. He would latch on long enough for my milk to let down and then seem to be done, but he wanted to eat every hour. He and both gained weight MUCH better with breast milk than they did when we tried formulas. They were dx'd when was 2 and was 5 1/2 mo. Looking back, it was easy to see that Em started having more problems when she weaned, so I have pretty strong feelings about staying with the breast milk if you can. 's issues were beyond it being breast milk and he's still having some feeding issues at the age of 5 with most of it's related to him not having much of an appetite. I agree with the others that you need to rule out medical issues before you presume it's a breast feeding thing. We've found ways to get high- calorie foods in 's diet and even though he eats far less than most kids do, with the high-packed calories, he's gaining and is up to the 20% percentile (from not even being on the charts for the first 2 years)! Hang in there - it really will get better! Angi Mom of (8), (6 wcf) and (5 wcf)
