you need to be on St johns wort for at least 6-8 weeks in general to see

benifits from it. This is shown and proven in studies

Get tincture form from a herbalist

vitamins & minerals?

anything about vitamins & minerals, etc....

guys have already talked about this at one point or another, but I guess I

am having memory lapses. I t just seems like some days are ok and others

are way worse. Like today, I got the paper work for the make a wish thing

and it completely did me in for the day. I have done nothing but lay

around and sleep. Pretty bad when you have to make yourself get up to take

a shower.

> To be honest it isn't just the make a wish thing alone. I am now faced

with calling my dad who I haven't seen in over 20 years, because my kids

want to meet him. Wrestling with that one still. Anyway, if it isn't one

thing its another.

> But, honestly, there is something wrong. When I get like this it takes

awhile to pull myself back up to where I ought to be. I thought that maybe

there was something I could get over the counter. I was put on Prozac a

while back. That almost caused me a divorce. I wasn't the most peachy

little thing on that stuff. I just quit taking it and haven't went back to

that doc again. When my sister went with me to tell him that it was

effecting me in a not so good way, he just said there is nothing wrong with

the drug- she needs to stay on it. So, I don't want anymore of that.

Torsten,

No, I haven't tried anything yet. Other than the prozac that the docs put

me on. Don't want a repeat of that. I am game for just about anything at

this point. I thought that maybe herbal stuff might be better? Maybe not

altering my personality in a bad way. I will try it.

Thanks.

I agree with the majority. Try the St s Wort. If it doesn't work,

think about a different therapist and medicine.

I tried Prozac also and was a MESS on it. Zoloft, however, did not

alter my personality as much and really helped.

Sometimes depression is a seasonal or temporary thing. Sometimes it

is not. Sadly, for me, the latter is true.

But it could be way worse. It could be the 1960's and I would have

most of my brain fried by now from Electric Shock Therapy!

Keep us posted. I really hope the natural way plus the coming of

spring do the trick!

I've heard St. s Wort is good for depression but be careful. It can

also cause liver problems. I know of a woman who was hospitalized twice for

severe liver problems and they couldn't figure out was the problem was.

They finally figured out it was the St. s Wort which she had neglected

to tell the drs she was taking.

For those who need to know, be aware that St. 's Wort can reduce

the effectiveness of birth control pills.

Check out vitamin B, I think is B12. I remember that my mom used to

swear by it.

Vondie,

Just to add my thoughts along with the others...

1. Be sure to take a complete multivitamin/mineral tablet every day --

without fail.

2. Be sure to stick to a regular bedtime and waking time routine.

3. Give the St. 's Wort a try -- invest in a German brand that

says it's standardized. Too many companies leaped upon the herbal

bandwagon and you want to be sure you're buying from a trusted source.

4. Take extra magnesium (and calcium); magnesium is necessary for

combatting depression. Don't bother with the cheapo magnesium oxide;

it's not readily absorbed -- get an amino acid chelate form. The

magnesium is bound to the amino acid to sneak it into the cells where

it needs to be.

A chemist once told me that people should be really careful taking

Prozac. If you have a family history of -- or undiagnosed bipolar

disorder -- then Prozac can bring out the bipolar disorder and it

won't ever go away.

And that's exactly what happened to one of my dearest friends... I

once saw her go into a bipolar mode while we were sitting at the

kitchen table over coffee and bagels doing the crossword puzzle from

the morning paper. She went from calm to anxious to obsessive then

became a crying, sobbing drama queen and then happy, giddy " I don't

care " euphoria and back again. She's since tried committing suicide

twice: scarring her wrists with a Gillette women's shaver, and

tossing herself downstairs... breaking her ankle so badly it required

surgery with plates and pins... So now whenever I hear the word

Prozac, my stomach knots up.
