carpal tunnel

Sandy,

I may have already posted on this. If so, just ignore me! Anyway, I have

carpal tunnel syndrome in my right wrist. It flares up terribly when I use my

hands a lot, drive for long periods of time, and/or have problems with fluid

retention. I wear a brace at night that has metal in it. It keeps you from

bending your wrist a lot during the night. During the day I wear a little brace

that is made from lycra and has a velcro strap that goes around the wrist. When

my wrist/hand is bothering me, I can tell a difference the minute I put the

brace on. Both braces came from walmart. The one with the metal is around

$10-15 for each hand. The lycra ones come two in a pack for $7-10. I keep one

of the lycra ones in my car, one in my purse, and a couple around the house. I

just throw them in the wash in a lingerie bag and then let them air dry.

By the way, when I drive for a long while, the pain is really not in my wrist,

it is down my forearm. Other times the pain is sometimes in my wrist, sometimes

in my hand. The ortho says that all of it is from carpal tunnel. He told me

that if it gets to the point that it is waking me up at night or to where I can

no longer tolerate the pain, he can do surgery, but for now he'd recommend I

just try to deal with it because I have so many medical issues. I think that

once they get my prednisone down to a lower dose (or stopped completely) my

fluid retention problem will go away and the carpal tunnel syndrome will

improve.

Best of luck,

W

I do not know if you are interested but I had the surgery for carpal tunnel

on both hands, one at a time and I did not feel it was a big deal. I have

had five attacks of acute pancreatitis and my pancreatus was not affected.

The hardest part was it was hard to use my hands for a while after the

surgery.

Thanks for replying. I am not happy of the prospect of more surgery,

even if only for my wrists. So for now I will deal with the pain. It

can be quite painful at times. But I tend to relate ALL pain levels to

my pancreatic attack pain and if it isn't that bad, I tend to ignore

it. For good or bad, thats what I do now.

When my doctor asked how painful was it I pointed and told her this is

pain (pointing to my pancreas) and then pointed to my wrist and arm and

said compared to that, this is annoying! :-)

Thanks again,

Sandy

Myrna,

Thanks for the info. I'm really not at all scared about having carpal

tunnel surgery. However, the doc I went seemed to be scared of me! He

asked both times he saw me (with wide aways) about the ugly bruises on my

arms. He acted like he would be afraid to do surgery on me with all my

health issues. I've had so many surgeries that another one or two is no

big deal for me. Especially since I have the port a cath and don't have to

worry about being stuck 10 times to get an IV started. I know there is

always a first and perhaps I should knock on wood, but I have come through

every surgery with flying colors and no complications. Right now I have a

hernia that has to be repaired. It is really causing increased problems

with complications, which seems to aggravate my pancreas, so I want to get

it taken care of as soon as possible. I'm also hoping that once they can

get me off of the prednisone, my fluid retention problems will go away and

the carpal tunnel problems will get better again. If not, then I'll

definitely have the surgery. Thankfully, I really have not had any problems

with the left wrist since I lost weight, so I don't think I'll need surgery

on it any time in the near future. Another thing I have to think about is

my daughter's upcoming wedding (May 29, 2004). By the time I get over the

hernia surgery, I think it may be getting too close to the wedding so I will

likely put off carpal tunnel surgery til after the wedding. I've got too

much to do for the wedding to do without my right hand for a few weeks!

I'm glad to know the surgery went well for you. I've heard that it almost

always has very good results. I've often found that the post op pain when

healing from the surgery isn't even as bad as the pain prior to surgery. At

least with post op pain, you know there is likely an end in sight.

I can sure see that you have a lot more health problems than I have had but

I also have had a lot of surgery, I feel. and the carpal tunnel was so

minnor. I would not want one before a wedding either, or anything big you

need to do and a wedding is so one.

I have had seven C sectionsm ,my appendex, gall bladder and one to drain a

syst. Both my hands hurt all the time before I had the surgery but now are

fine. I really do not remember any pain after but did have some pain pills

and some times one pain time runs into the next and I know you know what I

mean.

As I read these post, I feel so blessed to have a wonderful doctor that

listens to me and even people in the emergency room in our local hospital

that say " get her an I.V. and something for the pain " That man was not my

doctor but knew me. I just feel very bad for those on this list that have so

much pain and people thinking they do not.
