Guest guest Posted May 20, 2003 Report Share Posted May 20, 2003 FDA Gives Nod to New Airway Clearance System Mon May 19, 2003 08:32 PM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) - St. , Minnesota-based Advanced Respiratory Inc. reported on Monday that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market a smaller and more portable model of its Vest airway clearance system.The Vest is a medical device designed as an alternative to manual chest therapy for people with chronic lung disorders and diseases such as cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.The product is intended to help patients whose disease causes an overload of mucus or who have an impaired cough reflex. Mucus trapped in the lungs can cause infections and even irreversible lung damage, according to the company.Advanced Respiratory's product is capable of gently compressing and releasing the chest wall 5 to 20 times per second using an inflatable vest attached to air-pulse generator, the firm said.The Vest was first cleared in 1988 and has since been prescribed to more than 30,000 people worldwide, according to the company.Privately held Advanced Respiratory said the newer model weighs in at 17 pounds, or about half the weight of the previous system.
