FDA Gives Nod to New Airway Clearance System

Mon May 19, 2003 08:32 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) - St. , Minnesota-based Advanced

Respiratory Inc. reported on Monday that it has received clearance from

the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market a smaller and

more portable model of its Vest airway clearance system. The Vest is a

medical device designed as an alternative to manual chest therapy for

people with chronic lung disorders and diseases such as cystic

fibrosis, cerebral palsy and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The

product is intended to help patients whose disease causes an overload

of mucus or who have an impaired cough reflex. Mucus trapped in the

lungs can cause infections and even irreversible lung damage, according

to the company.Advanced Respiratory's product is capable of gently

compressing and releasing the chest wall 5 to 20 times per second using

an inflatable vest attached to air-pulse generator, the firm said. The

Vest was first cleared in 1988 and has since been prescribed to more

than 30,000 people worldwide, according to the company.Privately held

Advanced Respiratory said the newer model weighs in at 17 pounds, or

about half the weight of the previous system.
