STAPH QUANDRY...

My Son, Jack (now 2 years old) has had positive Staph results since he was 18

months old. Once he cultured Staph and Klebsiella, I demanded from our CF

Center that we do sputum cultures every three months when we see them (they only

routinely do sputum cultures once per year). Alarmingly, his recent culture

came back with " HEAVY " Staph colonization and his CF Pulmonologist is poo-pooing

the whole thing with this explanation: Jack's culture this time might have

contained " more sputum than spit " thus resulting in the higher Staph count.

I understand that the sputum cultures are done more on a qualitative (what bugs

are actually there) than quantitative measure but I'm scared that I might be in

the dark about what's actually going on in Jack's lungs. His CF Doc said that

the " Staph that Jack habours would have an ordinary person in the ICU, but since

he's a HOST, he's living with it amicably " .

I had his lab results faxed to me and I don't get ANY of it. What I hope to

learn from those that have ANYTHING to offer is primarily: Can the colonized

Staph do damage to Jack's lungs, even when he appears to be well?

Any advice will be GREATLY appreciated!

Paige (scared Mum to Jack, now 2 with CF)

My son is growing two different types of staph. No one seems overly

concerned either.

Paige,

I am curious about this, too, as Philip has always cultured staph. I

never seems to be a concern with our doctors, who are very

conscientious and thorough. But I always wonder about it.

Also, CFF guidelines from a few years ago, I think, said that all

centers should do cultures at each 3-month visit.

Ask your clinic about it.
