My daughter Kiersten is 5 and she has had the vest for 3 years and she

stills screams about doing it. We just practically sit on her to get it on.

Once its on she is pretty much ok. Its the getting it on that is the hard

part. Just my 2 cents even though I probably didn't help much.

My has just gotten the vest and she will not even look at it. I have

tried everything to get her to atleast try it on( I have even put it on and

showed her, she screamed the whole time with her hands over her eyes). Nothing

works. HELP. The lady is coming out on Tuesday to set everything up and make

sure it is working right. But, will resist and will not do what the lady

needs for her to do. Any suggestions.

Boy do I know what you mean I just got over the fight with my youngest! She

hates doing it and it is an on going fight everyday. I hate it!! My oldest is

just as bad and my youngest is just mimicking her older sister. I hate CF!!!

Hi Tracey,

Here are some ideas that I have seen used and that have been successful:

Initially, place it in a common area where the family can see it. You and

your family " play " with it and show enthusiasm. This may peak her interest.

Let her approach it at her speed. We have found that if you force them to

do it, compliance will be lower. Attach a positive reinforcement to using

the Vest (also known as a bribe). Let her watch a favorite video or play a

particular game ONLY during Vest therapy. Or maybe there is a favorite

activity she can participate in ONLY after the Vest treatment is done. Use

the timer as a way for your daughter to control her time...set it for X

number of minutes and when it " dings " , she is done. Start her out slowly.

Do only a few minutes and build up.

The most important thing...you have to remain in control. Don't give her

the option of whether or not to do it, rather, " Do you want to do your Vest

with the Monsters, Inc. video or do you want to color? When you finish,

we'll go to the kitchen and make some Jell-O together. "

See if that works for you. I hope it does. There are many parents here on

the list that have wonderful ideas and experiences. Good luck!

Hi,

We just got our vest, too. My daughter actually likes it (mostly) have you

tried putting it on a stuffed animal or doll? This was one of the things that

someone suggested to me to try in case she didn't like it. My daughter likes to

have her blanket get " vestie time " after she gets it herself. I wonder if it is

the sound of the compressor that is scary or the vest itself. Is it the black

ABI one? I have heard similar complaints elsewhere, some kids find the big

black vest a bit intimidating. If you aren't able to get her in it I'm sure the

rep will have suggestions.

Good Luck! (and btw vest time beats manual PT any day)
