Jen,

My daughter just kind of started skipping them without me knowing! When I would

tell her to take them she insisted that they made her bloat and that they would

make her stomache hurt. She even complained that they made it harder for her to

go to the bathroom. I thought she was just full of it!

I talked to her cf doctor the next time we went and he was blown away because

all of her complaints were exactly what the enzymes should correct. We tried

literally every brand of enzymes and even tried low dose ones instead of like

18's or 20's. She even complains when she takes only one pancrecarb 5.

I was worried about her vitamin levels so we tested her vitamin k, e, and a

level and they were all normal. She has gained weight wonderfully without them.

I wouldn't suggest taking your daughter off of enzymes if she is having a

problem with weight gain. wasn't properly diagnosed until she was 5 years

old, so, she had gone all that time without them and I pretty much new she

should be ok without them.

When I go back and think about it though, she has complained of tummy aches ever

since she started taking them at 5 years old. We always switched brands and

switched anti acid meds without getting results.

This is VERY abnormal for a cf kid, especially a double delta F509 carrier to

not need enzymes.

I would say that I saw the effects of taking her off enzymes almost immediately.

Within a couple of weeks of her not complaining of tummy aches and bloating, I

figured she must be telling the truth! Her cf doctor is stunned by this, he

doesn't have any other cf patient of her carrier type that can get away without

enzymes.

I hope this helps! I think after the biopsy comes back you will be able to make

more decisions about the enzymes. What carrier type is your daughter?

Hope this helps,

Lorenzen
