Have you all considered adoption? There alot of kids in this world who need

some great parents to love them. I for one speak from experience. My

adoption was prearranged before my birth mother ever delivered me, and I went

home with my parents straight from the hopsital. I always knew I was

adopted. My folks told me I was special because they chose me! I know there

are many other children who would love to have the opportunity of growing up

in a loving home surrounded by folks who truly adore them. It is the most

wonderful feeling in the world to know you are wanted and cherished by

someone else.

I would like to hear from parents who only have one child, and that

child has cf, particularly if you have no plans to or cannot have

another child.

I'm feeling really heartbroken today that the only baby I'll ever

have is going to leave me.

Hi Steph,

My son Zach is an only and we do not have plans to have any other

children. My first pregnancy was really rough and I delivered him 9

weeks early. No one could figure out what caused his prematurity

and I couldn't bear the thought having another preemie so I had my

tubes tied 9/02. Zach was diagnosed a month ago. I wonder if his

cf had anything to do with the difficult pregnancy. I guess we will

never know. I am sad in some ways that Zach is an only and glad in

other ways. I hope to have lots of time to give him all the

attention he needs, but I also am sad knowing that my motherhood my

not last the rest of my lifetime.

I understand how you feel and I hope that knowing that you are not

alone helps a little.

Hi Steph,

we had similar thoughts and since Fiona not only had no sibling but no

cousins too we finally decided to have another child. Don't know why you

can't have another one, but I understand how you feel about it. I hadn't

realized how much it depressed my wife then and she became so much happier

after we started to work on our second child. Is adoption an option for you?

Peace

My daughter is an only child, and I've had thoughts much like yours

in the past. However, I have come to a realization that if ever

there was a generation to find a cure -- it is this one. That is

one hope I have, the other is in the medical advancements that have

been coming at an exponential rate. They are extending the median

life expectancy much more rapidly than our own life expectancy has

been extended. There is hope!!!

Yes it is hard to have the thought that you may outlive your only

child, and there are many other things we cannot take for granted.

Personally, we may foster children or adopt later on (when Joy is

able to care for herself more), and there are other ways to give to

others so that part of us carries on once we're gone(big brothers,

and other organizations -- I think there's even an organization of

foster grandparents). Now, however, we are grateful she is an only

child. We are more than pleased to " spoil " her with our undivided

attention and our ability to somewhat-easily arrange meetings with

her friends. There are advantages and disadvantages to having more

than one child.

I hope you will come up with a plan or perspective that will not be

as heart-breaking!

As for me, I was not an only; nor was my own child who also has cf, BUT

I was the only child in the family, and the last, my sibblings being much

older, so I think that for my mother that I was almost as much her " only "

as was the first child, and I was the one wcf. She was terrified of losing

me, and fortunately, I have outlived her. My child wcf is also the youngest

and her siblings and I are afraid of losing her as she is the

" only, " one as was I in each family, to have cf. It IS different for both

parent and child if there are siblings, but an only cf child is perceived

and worried about more by the parents, and I feel, is aware of that.

All children with cf are so fortunate to have the loving parents we hear

from on this list!

Love to all parents of children wcf and all " onlies! "

aww Steph , I know how you feel, Billie is an only child and I had my tubes

tied when i was 26 she was 3. It scares me to death to think I may lose my

only child. But the way I keep my spirit up is. One I chose not to have any

other children because I would not and could not take the chance of putting

another child through what Billie jean has been through with her cf. She is

almost 9yrs old. She has done very well and in many sports but, this year

has been hard on her and I know that with only having her i can pull my full

attention to her and her health. There is nothing wrong with just having one

child. Even better because with them having cafe it is a full time job, you

have little or no time for other things. It is very scary I know to watch

your children being but I learned to take a step back and see what she sees.

Looking through the eyes of a child can be amazing. I have learned so much

by doing this. So when you feel down just hug your baby.and everything you

do that day try and look at it as he sees the world , it can be really fun.

I have 3 kids and two of them have CF and the two with CF were my worst

deliveries they were long and hard but my middle kid came out with know

problems. My oldest was only two days early (that has CF) my youngest with CF

was 10 days late, and my middle kid was 1 day early. So I don't know if

having your child early had anything to do with CF but I do wonder if CF

makes the pregnancy a hard delivery. Deb A
