Guest guest
> amitriptyline My experience with amitriptyline was constipation and very bad blurred vision. I even went to the eye doctor - got new contacts and thought they were bad. Went back again and he ordered new ones but come to find out - it was the amitriptyline. I had to stop taking it. Guest guest
Hi all, I have read with interest about the drug Elevil or amitriptyline. I have read where it causes weight gain. Does it do that when you are only taking 1 pill a day? I was cautioned about the side effects of dry mouth, nausea, and constipation. Are all these true too? Thanks Sandy Fairfield, Ca

Guest guest
Sandy, I take Elavil, as for the weight gain, I have no idea if my weight gain was from the Elavil (amitrytiline) or other meds as I am taking so many. How ever, I can vouch for the dry mouth. Boy do I got it. My dentist said that if you take 3 or more medications, it's a guarantee that at least one of them causes dry mouth. I personally haven't gotten the nausea or constipation from this drug, though. I've been taking Elavil for about 15 years now and don't seem to have anything else. I will warn you about the sleepyness. If your doctor is smart, he'll start you off on 10mgs and work your way up slowly, or expect to spend the next two weeks asleep. It's best to take the medication before you go to bed, not during the day, because of this side effect. The sleepiness eases off some after two weeks or so, but I still would continue to take it only at bedtime as it can continue to make you somewhat sleepy, just not to the degree that it does you when you are first starting the medication. Guest guest
Sandy, I have found that if I take the Elavil around 8-9pm I am usually not as tired in the morning. Take Care, Patty Louisville, KY
Guest guest
Thank you. Iam not taking it myself. My 12 year old has been perscribed it for his migraines following the concussion he got in August. I had not heard of this drug except from on this site so I knew if I asked questions about it, you all would help me. I am giving him 1 pill only at night around 7:30 as he goes to bed around 9:00 or so. It seemed to work well last night. I am just so worried about any weight gain. He can't afford any. Thanks again for all the info. Guest guest
Sandy...there are many other meds he can be given (well...a doc would have to decide that for sure since he is a child) but there's Neurontin which is a anti-seizure drug helps prevent migraines...and I don't recall it having weight gain as a side effect. There are also older blood pressure meds given to prevent migraines ...I am taking a small dose of Inderal (propranolol) and having decent success with it. Don't let the docs saddle him with weight gain if there are other drugs available. There are websites : headaches.com, headaches.org and others where you can read about the meds out there. Use a good search engine, don't accept the two sites I've given you as the only ones. The drugs called " -triptans " are the ones given at the onset of the migraine and they are working well. (sumatriptan-imitrex [avail in injection, pill and nose spray forms]; almotriptan-axert; maxalt and zomig too, but I can't recall their " triptan " name.) I " failed " with three of them (lousy side effects) but finally had good relief with NO side effects with the fourth one (axert), so hang tight and be patient. If your son says the -triptan makes his head feel " weird " believe him...and that's the best description he's probably going to be able to give you...I still can't come up with anything better ! One of them put me in the emergency room with full body numbness ! ODD reaction ! But I **always** have strange reactions to things, so don't let my experiences frighten you! My daughter was in the care of a pediatric-neurologist when she was in junior high and high school ... does your son have one? They specialize in treating headaches and migraines in kids. was a little older than your boy when she had four months of daily headache. She was finally treated for tension-migraine complex which is one of the most difficult headaches to get rid of because they feed into each other...*after* she was diagnosed with this complex I spoke with my doctor and realized that I TOO have this headache complex ! Joy ! Good luck,,,,Hugs, Jeannine > > Sandy,> > > > I have found that if I take the Elavil around 8-9pm I am usually not as tired > > in the morning.> > Take Care,> > Patty
Guest guest
Jeannine, Thanks for all the good info. As for the neurontin, I hesitate on that because one of the RARE side effects of that drug is that it can cause Pancreatitis. And since I have idiopathic pancreatitis, I won't take that drig and am very hesitant to give it to my son. All he has said about the amitriptyline is that after HOURS of playing his video games, his hands felt numb. Something he has NEVER complained of and he's an avid gamer. He is in th care of a pediatric neurologist. We were trying Periactin for his at first, but it gave him severe and frequent nose bleeds. So now he has perscribed, compasine, amitriptyline and mazalt. He had a pretty bad nose bleed yesterday but we have only been on the amytriptyline for just one dose so I will watch to see if it's that or not. I did consult my primary care doctor whom I TRUST with my life and my child's and she said in her opinion that 1 pill will probably not make him gain weight. She would be concerned if it were several pills a day for that to happen. And I expressed my concern to the neuro doctor and he said that he only felt my son would be on this medication for about 3 weeks. So we will see. I will check out the link you said and have written down the other medicne and will check that out on RXLIST.com and then talk to the neuro doctor if it looks to be something I think is appropriate for my kid. I don't like him being on anything for any length of time, but at least he isn't on the Motrin in huge quantities (knock on wood) anymore. As that is also known to cause pancreatitis, in long term use. In may seem to other people that I am paranoid with my kid developing pancreatitis because of perscription drug use, but those of us with it know the pain and wouldn't want anyone else to ever get it. Thanks again and if anyone else has any advice for me, I'm more than willing to listen.
