Is it okay for my almost 3 yowcf to be around animals? She does not

have any allergies that we are aware of. We have 1 cat in our

house, and 2 dogs outside. I am more primarily concerned with the

conditions at our day care providers house. She has 3 long haired

cats and 1 dog, and she also does " doggie daycare " for her son's

cocker spaniel. That equals five animals in a very small house

during the day with my child. I am not comfortable with this

situation, but possibly I am over-reacting. When Peyton was first

diagnosed her doctors wanted to know if we had any pets and whether

the were inside or outside, but then noting more was said about it.

Could this pose a problem with my daughters health?

Thanks!

If your child has allergies on top of her CF it could be a problem but it should

be ok if she doesn't. We have 2 cats and it doesn't bother 's lungs at

all. Lots of adults with Cf choose to have " fur babies " instead of human ones

so they don't risk their health with pregnancies... But if it bothers you or

her, maybe a different daycare wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Good

Luck!

Wendi,

When Eilish was dx we asked the pet question. Her dr's said it was fine

and that children benefit from having pets regardless of Cf. We have 1

cat and two dogs. They are all inside/outside pets (they come and go).

Eilish is always picking up the little dog and she has never had any

problems. She doesn't have allergies and maybe if she did it would be

different.

I think the most important thing is that you and your daughter are

comfortable with the choices you are making. I personnaly got rid of

our cat because Raphaëlle got Pseudomonas just after we had the cat.

It's probably just a coincidence but I was not comfortable with the

sitation anymore. We still have our dog that stays outside and the

the cat is at my mom's house so the girls can see it often.

Now that the cat is gone since a few months, Raphaëlle just had a

negative culture for Pseudomonas????? Probably another coincidence, I

never talked about it with the Docs, maybe I should.

We have three dogs, a cat, and a husband. If she has been around animals

since birth then that reduces her risk for developing allergies later on.

They build up the antibodies needed to be immune to the dander. I would say

that as long as the house is clean for the most part, I mean you can't have

an immaculate house with animals, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Just geting caught up on my e-mail (or at least TRYING to!), and wanted to

answer this. In our house, we have two dogs (lab crosses--about 50 pounds

each), 5 cats, 3 hamsters, and 7 fish (okay--so the fish are just thrown in

there to round it out--no allergies!). Cody has been tested for allergies

and has come back negative both with the " prick " test on the back and also

the interdermal on the arm. But, of course, one of his docs (he sees

several) was always on us about the pets, while the others don't see a

problem with them. I finally got angry about it and really ripped into him,

and he has been fine with it ever since (or at least he keeps his mouth shut

about it!) LOL Cody has no problems with it, so there is no reason to get

rid of them.
