blood sugar level and blood pressure

Hi all,

I know this is the Pancreatic website, but I worry for my child

getting this and I am scared about something and need advice from

someone. My kid is 12, stands 5'9 and is a stocky 220lbs. He hides

that well. He has been having frequent and moderate nosebleeds, I

believe, because of a medicine the Nuero doctor put him on for a

concussion he received 5 weeks ago. He's on periactin every night.

I went to check his blood pressure and it wouldn't read...not at the

store or with my home reader. I also went to check his blood sugar

about 3 hours after he ate and it was 90. I thought anything below

120 was fine, but a nurse said that was high and I needed to call my

doctor. So now I am freaking out about this and naturally it's

saturday and no one is open on the weekends.

Is not being able to read a blood pressure necessarily a bad thing?

He has had high blood pressure in the past but only because of

drinking to much gatorade. The blood pressure machine said it didn't

read because of a wear artery pulse. And the blood sugar reading? Is

that a thing to worry about too?

Sorry again for asking a non pancreatic question, but seeing as I have

it as idiopathic, I am concerned my child may one day get it too.

Thanks SO MUCH in advance,

Sandy

If your son doesn't have diabetes then his blood sugar is fine. It isn't

anywhere close to being high. If you are worried about his blood pressure,

I would take him to the immediate care in the morning. I hope this finds

you and yours well

Sandy,

if it was me, I'd take him to the emergency room. The nosebleeds with

the not being able to get a blood pressure reading is just a little too

worrying. The bloodsugar isn't that high. 80 is normal.

Dear Sandy,

I hope this nurse isn't a friend of yours, or someone you consult

regularly for advice. Your son's blood sugar level was perfectly

fine. Children's levels should be in the same range as an adult,

which is 70-110. Three hours after a meal, anything under 120

is acceptable, as long as it's not below 70. The nurse needs a

refresher course, or something, so she won't give out

information that alarms concerned parents! To verify this, go to

this website:

http://www.health.yahoo.com/health/centers/diabetes/11.html

As for his blood pressure, you may wish to have that checked at

the hospital. I don't know what it means that you can't get a

reading at all, but as you probably know, as optimal reading is

120/80. If the reading is anything over 140/90 it is considered

high and needs medical attention. For a child, reading's in the

90th percentile are too high and treatment is suggested.

I hope this helps.

With hope and prayers,

Thank you all for answering me back. I was so upset over this and

didn't know where else to turn but to this board!

I got my son to a store blood pressure machine. It did the error thing

on him and then turned out a reading of 145/65. Perhaps at that time he

was stressing about me trying to take his BP so much. But I will make

an appointment and have that checked. He has an appointment with the

nuro dr. on thursday and a physical on the 24th.

I was pretty sure the blood glucose was fine. Heidi had walked me

through testing mine for the first time so I THOUGHT I knew what I knew

was correct, but when a medical person tells you something you tend to

believe them straight away.

Thanks again everyone! You all really came through for me.
