Guest guest
Dear Jean, There's really no specific time frame that could apply in regard to diabetes. It is such an individual thing, and probably other conditions could factor in. Yet it is known that because of our chronic pancreatitis and the damage caused to the exocrine and endocrine systems as a result of our pancreatitis, CPer's are at a higher risk for diabetes than the common Joe. Some people with CP never get diabetes at all. Others eventually do, and many of those only have type 2 diabetes. In my case, I was diagnosed with type 1 less than 2 years after my initial diagnosis of CP. There is no history whatsoever of anyone else in my genetic line of ever having diabetes. Go figure! The most common signs of diabetes are: frequent urination, (especially having to get up several times during the night to go), excessive thirst, increased hunger, blurred vision and fatigue. Some other symptoms are: unexplained weight loss, dry skin, a thin, malnourished appearance, frequent infections that are slow to heal, blood pressure over 140/90 , HDL cholesterol less than 35 mg/dl or triglycerides more than 250 mg/dl. I'm sorry that I personally can't help you with any information regarding the CF gene, though I do know of some members that have this that do have CP. If your daughter is having so many of these problems, Jean, you do need to encourage her to have regular checkups with her physician. I don't remember whether you said she has a gastroenterologist, or not, but she really does need to have thorough checkups with any problems she may be encountering. You didn't say what her problem was now that she would want diuretics for, but as I'm sure you know, it would be better for a physician to examine her to find out what's wrong, than for you to dispense medication that's prescribed for you. I know you only want to help her, but right now it sounds like a doctor could help her more. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina SC & SE Regional Rep. PAI, Intl. " What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. " - Ralph Waldo Emerson is really having problems with this now, in fact she asked me for some of my diuretics to see if they helped. has not had anything checked for some time. I am really interested in learning if anyone has the cf gene also with the pancreatitis. Jean
