Guest guest
My 4 year old son had a throat culture done 2 weeks ago and after calling the clinic, they informed me he cultured haemophilus influenza, heavy growth. The nurse informed me they don't consider this an " abnormal " result and weren't going to prescribe anything. She said it was easily treatable with Bactrim. Is this normal? This is the first time he has cultured anything heavy so I am concerned. The clinic acts like it is no big deal, but I just keep thinking SOMETHING should be done. He is not sick at all, our visit 2 weeks ago was great- gained 2 lbs in 3 months and grew an inch. He is 4 1/2 and weighs 44 lbs and is 43 in-- so it's not like I have anything to fall back on, like I think he is getting sick, etc. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? Am I overreacting? Thanks Kim Mom to Jack 4 1/2 w/cf
Guest guest
H-Flu isn't the flu itself. I read an article that the majority of the population carries this bacteria and it is very common. cultures it often and when he was a baby they would treat it all the time but I have noticed recently that unless it is with another bacteria they have left it alone. mom to jeremiah 3wcf and brenna 7wocf > >Reply-To: cfparents >To: cfparents >Subject: haemophilus influenza >Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2003 13:40:08 -0500 > >My 4 year old son had a throat culture done 2 weeks ago and after calling >the clinic, they informed me he cultured haemophilus influenza, heavy >growth. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I don't think that you are overreacting. It's usual that we are scared when docs tell us that something grows heavily in our kids' lungs that shouldn't be their at all. Fiona has cultured for h.flu three times so far, but in our case it was pretty easy to eradicate. We always go by cough frequency and start a new round of oral antibiotics when Fiona coughs at night too. Our first (and probably last) use of Bactrim ended with a nasty rash in Fiona's face and we have gone back to cefaclor, a cephalosporine that always helps Fiona big time ..
