>Hi Andre, are you going to the symposium August 28 or 29?  Shirley<

Shirley,

When I saw this it made me rethink my assumption that everybody was coming

for both days. The reason I ask is due to the fact that we are full. If someone

isn't coming for both days, it might open up a spot for someone for at least

one day.

If those who are registered are not planning on coming for both days, let me

know.

Here is the updated agenda.

HI Karyn, if the room is full on the 28 we will just arrive later on that day

and only attend the symposium on the 29. No problem. Thanks, Shirley

Shirley,

Consider yourself registered for both days, but do what ever you need to do

regarding driving, arriving and leaving. I do appreciate knowing that you will

be arriving at noon thereabouts on Thursday. That way I won't be looking for

you in the morning. Registration & Sign in starts at 8am, but the 1st session

doesn't start until 9am. The sessions are 75 minutes each with a break in

between each one. Lunch is one hour. The rest in on the agenda I sent you.

It's starting to be exciting. I am asking for all to pray that I am able to

negotiate an agreement with the medical school administration. I am inviting

their students, faculty, & staff to attend Dr. Sutherland's presentation, in

exchange for an auditorium or other classroom that can hold 60 for Friday &

Saturday. This is a world renowned speaker, and it is ludicrous if very possible

person who is interested doesn't attend. Yesterday, when I called to go over

travel arrangements, Dr. Sutherland had flown to Turkey to give a presentation.

That was after surgery, and before another case he was to do that night,,,in

the US. I reminded them that we are no big medical convention, we are just

people whose lives have been affected by Pancreatitis, who have come together in

a

common search for the end to the insanity, and a little bit of quality of

life. He normally speaks to audiences of 750 - 1000, and we are hoping to have

30,

maybe 60. We can't pick him up in a limousine, but a Honda. I just want to

make sure he is aware of the venue he will be speaking at. All he says, is,

" Book my flight, I am looking forward to coming. " It is so unusual to meet

someone

who walks the path of humility, whose vision is purely focused on helping

other people, and eliminating disease from their life.

Wow,

Dear Karyn,

I have contacted SCCH, Regional Hospital, and Union hospitals in this

area asking them to post the information concering the upcoming

symposium. I hope this draws some interest from this area. If I can

think of anyone else to contact, I will contact them also. I am so

sorry that the turnout is not good and wish I could take some of this

burden off of you, Thinking of you, Jean Lindley

I have contacted SCCH, Regional Hospital, and Union hospitals in this area

with information concerning the symposium<<

Jean,

Thank you for the help in advertising. I sent some information about it.

Go ahead and fill out a Registration form so we will have it. I will let

everyone know as soon we find a larger room. It may need to be at the medical

school, but that is right across the hospital from the Conference center.

Hi all. I haven't been able to get on the Board to post in quite a

while. Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. Haven't read

much on the Symposium. Was just wondering how it went and if there's

anything new. I, too, wished I had been able to make it, but it

wasn't possible. Thanks and hope everyone is having a pain free day!

Hi Felicity, all

Yes, this year's Symposium was a great success. I had to leave to go

out of town for 3 days right after it finished, so I am just now

getting back to wading through all the e-mail that built up over the

past 5 days. The attendance hit its " peak " during Dr. Sutherland's

sessions on Friday morning - 48 were present, about 20 of which were

various doctors and other health care professionals from several of

the local hospitals here in Indianapolis. They seemed quite excited

by the information Dr. Sutherland had to share with them.

There were 28 patients/caregivers present at some point during the 2-

day SYmposium. Not everyone was able to attend all the sessions, but

they were all very worthwhile. It was good to see many of the folks

from this board, including Kimber, Keri, Heidi, Lilly, ,

Shirley, Sue R., Gail M., Peg B., Jean, , Jackie ... who am I

forgetting? Also a number of others who don't have computer access,

but who found out about the Symposium through other means (one of the

GI doctors at IU had taken it upon himself to mail flyers about the

Symposium directly to a number of his patients!).

In addition to Dr. Sutherland's 3 sessions, we had 2 sessions led by

GI doctors; one by a pain management specialist; one by an

RN/diabetes management specialist; a panel on dealing

with " spirituality issues " led by an RN, a therapist, and a hospital

chaplain; and one by an opthalmologist who specializes in vision

problems caused by diabetes. We also had a panel of 4 of Dr.

Sutherland's former patients who have had the Total Pancreatectomy

and Auto Islet Cell Transfer who shared their experiences with that

procedure. In addition, we had time for a number of the patients

present to " share their stories " in dealing with this disease.

Gail W. did a marvelous job in creating " notebooks " for all the

attendees, with pertinent excerpts from the PAI, along with all the

handouts from the speakers. And Peg designed and provided special

pins with a golden rose and green ribbon to mark the event. Kristy's

wonderful arrangement of flowers (proteas?) from Hawaii made the

journey safely, and was prominently on display at every session.

We were able to video tape all the sessions, and I think the quality

of the recording this year will be excellent, since we had the use of

the university's " professional " video equipment, and the sound was

fed directly from the speakers' lapel mics into the recorder. WIth

over 16 hours of presentations, it will take us some time to go

through it all, edit it, and get it ready for distribution to any/all

who are interested. Once again, we will make those copies available

for " cost " , including copies of all the handouts. I don't know

exactly what that cost will be yet - depends on how many video tapes

are required to hold all the sessions. We may look into the

possibility of putting this year's Symposium procedings on DVD as

well as VHS, depending on the cost.

It will probably take at least a month for us to get that ready.

When the copies are available, it will be announced on the message

board.

Thanks to all who helped make this event possible, and especially to

Karyn for her " blood, sweat, and tears " ... and the vision she has

held for the PAI. It always takes quite a bit out of her, but

hopefully she'll be able to get back to posting on the board herself

soon. In the meantime, I know she would appreciate hearing any/all

words of encouragement that any of you would care to send her. It's

a huge undertaking, and sometimes seems somewhat " thankless " . But

all who were able to attend this year know how important this event

has become.

Plan now to attend next year's Symposium!

Cheers,

I'm so glad Tull was able to explain the symposium adgenda so

throughly and I'm so glad I was able to be a participant of this

informative and educational experience. I attended all sessions

Thursday and most of Friday. Unfortunately flight connections

and a previous commitment here at home caused me to have to

miss the Friday afternoon session, which was the session on

Opthamology with Diabetes and the PAN-AICT forum with

Shirley, Sue, Gail and .

I'm really sorry I had to miss that, ladies, but your comments

earlier brought tears to my eyes and hope to my heart, and I'm

honored to have met you even so briefly. Keep your stories alive,

so that others may benefit from your experience!

I thought each session was worthwhile, and especially enjoyed

Dr. Sutherland, (especially when he could slow down), Dr.

McHenry and the pain management physician's discussion. I

know now I will make this a yearly commitment.

While speaking of commitments, I can't say enough about the

commitment of one special woman that made this possible for

us, and that would be Karyn. It must have taken phenominal

hours of time and effort all year, and a tremendous amount of

stress and corrdination to put this whole two day symposium

together, and I am amazed that she did so and that it flowed so

smoothly. Her blood, sweat and tears are much appreciated by

this participant.

Every strong woman has a good, reliable backbone, and Tull

certainly provided this for Karyn. I've never seen anyone who

can run up and down stairs so often and so effortlessly, while

juggling so many tasks at one time!

Thank you for a job so well done!

With hope and prayers,

The symposium went very well. If you want to get a copy of it, Tull will

annouce to the board when it is available. He said in about a month or

so it should be ready.
