You can apply for SSD as soon as you are no longer worker or if you are earning

less than $800 per month from working. However, even if you are approved for

SSD immediately, you will not begin receiving any money from SSD until you have

had five months of not working or five months of making less than $800 per month

from working. for example, let's say you are currently working and have been

making an average of $1000 per month. If you were to stop working today and go

to SS tomorrow and apply for disability, the first month that you could get any

money for SSD would be either Feb or Mar 2004. I'm not sure if the five months

actually begins on the day you stop working or if it begins on the first day of

the following month. In my case, I stopped working on March 21, 2003. I also

applied for SSD on that day. They told me that the first month I could get any

money from SSD would be Sep 2003. As I said in my previous e-mail, my SSD has

been approved so I should get SSD for the month of Sep 2003 and each month after

that. They told me it may take 2-3 months to complete the processing so I may

not actually see a check from SS until October or November 2003, but I guess I

will actually receive back pay beginning with Sep 2003.

I hope I explained this so that it makes sense. In a nutshell, what I'm trying

to say is that in the best case scenario, you will have 5 months with no income

(or income less than $800 per month) before you can get any money from SSD. I

have no clue how anyone is supposed to survive with no income for five months

but that is how SSD works. Do you have any type of disability plan or

disability retirement through your employer?

Please know that you are in my prayers. I am fortunate to be a former federal

government employee so I have a disability retirement from my federal government

job in addition to the SSD that I will be receiving in the future.
