I found this in my scrapebook. I could really relate to this!

Enzymes

In the bed, on the linens, in folds of the mattress, and stuck inside pillow

cases,

In all the pockets, lapels, shoes, and boots, in the most unreasonable

places,

Between the woodwork and floor, in the cracks of tiles

In drawers and cupboards, even in my files

Deep in the couch, in the corners of chairs

and all the holes of the radiators, under the rug of the stairs,

In all the nooks and crevices, of everywhere I stay.

Are home to the enzymes after they roll away.

Each pellet or ball or enteric coated microsphere

I can identify by its company, its brand name and manufacturer

Whether Ultrese or Creon or the famous Pancrease

Formed in round balls or tiny pellets or in a powdered base

You're at my side always to assist me in my role

But I can't wait for the day my kids swallow them WHOLE!!

Dear ,

Three Viokase with each meal, and two with snacks would be a

" normal " dosage for certain people. Some people take more,

some people take less. You need to understand that our

doctors base our enzyme dosage based on how well, or how

poorly we seem to be digesting our food. If evidence of

steatorrhea is found (foul smelling, oily stools that float), this

indicates that a higher dosage is necessary. A good specialist

will consult the patient very thoroughly on their bowel habits and

appearance of the stools, and their physical reaction after eating,

i.e; levels of pain or gastric upset to determine an appropriate

amount of enzymes.

Viokase is one of the types of pancreatic enzymes that requires

an antiacid like Prevacid or Zantac to be taken in conjunction with

the enzyme in order for it to be most effective and to work without

causing additional stomach distress. I hope your physician has

thought to prescribe this. The antiacid should be taken about 15

minutes before you take the enzymes. If your physician

neglected to prescribe the antiacid, you can use OTC Zantac or

similar antiacid just as well. The reason for this is that this type

of enzyme can upset gastric acidity and cause low dueodenal

PH, the antiacid taken beforehand prevents this from happening.

I hope the Viokase works for you. The diarrhea you got from the

Creon is NOT one of the positive side effects of enzyme

supplementation...they're supposed to prevent that, so switching

brands will hopefully be successful for you.

With hope and prayers,

Heidi
