Guest guest
Hi , I have had SOD and chronic panc for 3 years now. I have had the SOD longer though. I have had about 6 ERCP's with stent placement. Last August 1, 2002, I had the sphincteroplasty and ductoplasty of my common bile duct performed. I feel bad about telling you my experience, but I didn't want your post to go unanswered since I have been there, done that. I had my surgery performed by a " pancreatic surgeon " who used to work in Minnesota with Dr. Sutherland (you have probably heard of him by now). I have a very complicated case because I have a loop in my pancreatic duct, but she wanted to try this surgery rather than doing a Whipple right off the bat. The surgery itself went fine. It took about 5 hours and I was in the hospital for 5 days. Initially, the pain was gone immediately, however, at 3 weeks postop the same pain returned. I ignored it, thinking it was a " fluke. " No such luck. The surgery, for me, had failed, probably because of the loop. Even though she cut open the duct and sewed it open so everything could flow, I still keep getting built up pressure because of my loop. (I am just assuming that your surgeon is going to do the same thing, but I do not know. Let me know! My surgeon cut the duct open and sewed it open to the outside so it is " free flowing " now). I hope this doesn't discourage you from what you need to do. The only problem with my surgery was the loop. If it hadn't been for that, I would probably be doing great from it and would really not discourage anyone from having this done. Please let me know if you have any specific questions (I don't care how many!!). I will help you in any way and hope things go well for you. You can e-mail me at nancy@... Again, ask away! I'll help to the best of my ability. Take care and hang in there!!! (Ohio), where do you live?

A stent was placed but it failed to migrate because of the tortuosity (the loop) and had to be pulled. The ERCP doc sent me back to the surgeon who said the sphincteroplasty had <50-50 chance of efficacy because of the duct and a whipple might be necessary. He has sent me back to the ERCP doc for another look which I will have done in a few weeks. Have you had any other surgeries since the sphincteroplasty. Here's a kick; I am a RN BSN and work in a very large teaching univesity and know both those guys very very well. in SC > > >
