Guest guest
My son Chas is 18 mos. I have posted three or four times, but usually I just read to learn. I am scared because I never know what to do when he shows any sign of being sick. He went to clinics about two weeks ago and was doing so great that for the first time in over a year, we can wait 6 weeks before going back. We have been out of the hospital since early November which is great since we had been in 9 times from the time he was 3 mos until this last Nov. We lost insurance coverage for the nursing hours he had at a daycare/nursing facility and he isn't approved for home health care either. The insurance said that the care he requires can be given by custodial care. SO........back to why I am not sure now. For the past four days his nose has been running and running and running. I called his CF docs and they said I could get him in on Tuesday clinics if I am still concerned. The nurse said to try pediasure as a decongestant, but it hasn't really helped. My 3 yr old daughter(no CF) takes Benadryl(Spelling?) when she gets stuffy and itchy eyes, but I am not sure with Chas!! He has a periodic cough, mostly with treatments and cpts, but his poor little nose is just full of stuff. He has no fever and like I said the cough is small, but now that a nurse doesn't see him everyday, I don't know what to do!!!! I know I must seem too unknowledgeable, but I really depended on the nurses he had everyday, and I am now very scared about not doing enough or being too crazy about " normal " stuff. HELP!!! le, mom of Chas (18 mos) wcf
Guest guest
You are right to get him seen, but in the meantime. . . We were told never to give our son Benedryl because it dries up the mucus and causes more thickness and we don't want that. We were, however, advised to give him Dimetap for runny or stuffy nose. It helped ease the symptoms immensely. Not sure what to do My son Chas is 18 mos. I have posted three or four times, but usually I just read to learn. Guest guest
Some doctors will tell you bennadryl and some avoid it like the plague. I think it depends a lot on your child. In 2 of my kids (one w/cf and one with out) it just makes their mucus thicker and hard to get out, my other two kids do just fine with it. We usually up breathing treatments for our kid with cf and keep her nose moist with saline spray and suction it out like crazy. If that doesn't work we try pediacare or another psuedophedrine product. Then we do the old elevate the bed trick and so on. All of this trial and error usually takes a week for us. If by that time she isn't showing any signs of improvement I call the clinic and get and antibiotic and then she is usually better in two days. Some one mentioned teething...it can make the nose run. In looking back over Patti's records, she had to have an antibiotic every time she began to get teeth. I guess the excess snot was just too much for her lungs. I hope all gets better for you and Chas. Dawn mom of 4, 7 and under, the youngest wcf
Guest guest
le, My doctor has allowed Elyse to have infant's Sudafed for a runny nose. I have always been told to purchase items without cough suppressants. Also, you can call the nurse at clinic to check on what you can give him without making a trip. In my opinion, if the mucous is clear, I would treat him at home. Colleen Mommy to Elyse 2 w/ CF " There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. Guest guest
I know from my , he's 6 that when he has a cold, as long as his nose is running clear, not yellow or green, that it's just a cold. If it's not clear then it's full of bacteria. I always just gave him tylenol cold for kids and upped his breathing treatments until the cold was gone. Colds would always eventually flare his lungs up. So I would try to prevent that from happening. mom of 2 w/cf
